Instructor in Computer Science Garden City Community College, Department of Computer Science

This is a full-time, 172 day contract position under the direction of the appropriate Division Director and the Vice President of Instructional Services. The primary assignment is to provide instructional services and learning facilitation for students in the Business and Technology Division. 

This assignment includes (but is not limited to) the following:
  • Teaching day and/or evening face-to-face or hybrid courses in computer and information sciences. Areas of instruction include hardware, software, networking, cyber-security, digital forensics, programming and application. Responsible for preparing and delivering lectures, hands on demonstration, cooperative learning, leading and moderating classroom discussions, and administering and grading examinations. Courses are offered in accordance with established standards and course syllabi.
  • Providing individual and small group facilitation of learning, diagnostic assessment of students, and identification of appropriate learning materials.
  • Participating in course and curriculum design, student advisement, program review, and college committees as required to maintain and to improve the learning program.
  • Participating in the operation of computer and other labs and providing direction and help to students and student assistants.
  • Remaining current in subject matter and in the techniques most effective to promote student learning.
  • Demonstrating initiative and enthusiasm for recruiting.
  • Participating in staff and college meetings and contributing through appropriate committee assignments and other relevant tasks as assigned.

Qualifications 

Required 

Master's degree Computer Science or Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in Computer Science. 

Desirable 

Preference will be given to those candidates who establish the highest level of professional competency as evidenced by:
  • Community college teaching experience at multiple skill levels.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing.
  • Knowledge of computer assisted learning strategies.
  • Ability to motivate and teach students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds.

  • Clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Physical Requirements 

Ability to stand and sit for extended periods; speak and hear clearly in group settings and at distances of 30 feet; maintain physical mobility, alertness, and composure; utilize appropriate presentation materials and equipment; and transport self and equipment to various campus/community/area sites as needed.

Salary 

Based on the minimum and/or desirable qualifications. Placement on the salary schedule is based on verification of experience, relevant degrees, and upper division/graduate course work.

This is a full-time bargaining unit position, 172-day faculty contract beginning with the Fall Semester of the 2016-2017 academic year.

Selection Process
