PhD Student Position in IoT Security and Privacy University of Surrey, Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/cs/), within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, has an international reputation for research and teaching. In the National Student Survey of 2015/16, overall student satisfaction was 95%. Research in the department is focussed on two main areas: Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering, and Secure Systems, with Surrey recognised by GCHQ as one of only thirteen Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research. Its security related research is focused on protocol analysis, security verification, trusted computing, data privacy, access control, privacy-preserving architectures, vulnerability analysis, distributed ledger technologies, digital forensics and human-centred computing.

Major Responsibilities

We are looking for an excellent, motivated, self-driven doctoral student to work in the exciting area of Internet of things (IoT) security and privacy focusing on developing new, smarter, and more agile security approaches. The PhD student will join the Secure Systems group (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/cs/research/) for three years, working in the area of secure and privacy-preserving communication and execution of the core IoT end-points including resource-constrained embedded devices, mobile phones (in the context of mobile sensing applications) and vehicles.

With the rise of the Internet of Things, the number of devices that run potentially vulnerable software has exploded, and vulnerabilities are increasingly being discovered in the software running on these devices. To keep up with the amount of services that must be vetted for vulnerabilities, an automated approach is required. Alternative, security architectures are required which allow the system to detect whether it is under attack, and therefore intensify the protection mechanisms. Particular focus will be given on control systems, communication and computing infrastructures, wireless communication and embedded software verification. This call allows for flexibility in the proposal of a research topic. Examples include:·         Provably Secure Execution Environments for Embedded SystemsSecurity and Privacy Issues in Mobile Sensing Applications

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong technical and theoretical skills to implement and test various protocols. Furthermore, during his/her studies, he/she will obtain the necessary skills for analysing protocols for possible flaws and vulnerabilities while (s)he will also gain valuable experience on proving the correctness and the security of a protocol. The results should be published at top conferences and in leading journals.

The PhD student will be supervised by Dr. Thanassis Giannetsos (http://www.surrey.ac.uk/cs/research/ss/people/athanasios_giannetsos/
