Postdoc Position in Computational Design Environment ETH Zurich, Department of Computer Science
The Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication of ETH Zurich examines the changes in architectural design and production that result from the introduction of digital manufacturing techniques. The focus is cutting-edge research into computational design, constructive systems and their synthesis through the use of novel robotic fabrication technologies. We seek from the 1st of July 2016, or by agreement a
Postdoc Computational Design Environment (80-100%)
We are looking for a postdoctoral candidate who will implement a computational design environment that is geared towards coupling advanced computational design techniques with bespoke digital pre-fabrication processes. The computational design environment will include common design and fabrica-tion libraries and interfaces to various sensors and actuators, and it will be open to computational cus-tomisation and to the application of different robotic systems. A specific focus will be the integration of real-world physical constraints and criteria, as well as existing robotic control packages (in particular ABB RobotStudio). The exploration and development strongly focuses on real-world fabrication stud-ies, and builds upon the direct collaboration with on-going research of the Gramazio Kohler Research group (including consultation and supervision of doctoral students) within the National Centre of Com-petence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication.
The candidate should have a doctoral degree in computational science or related fields, and multiple years of scientific (postdoc) experience. As such, we expect professional programming experience (real-time programming and optimisation, programming for closed loop control applications or similar) as well as in-depth analytical and mathematical skills. Further, the candidate has profound skills in interface and simulation design (e.g. various simulators, signals and systems knowledge, etc.), and also experience in computer-aided design and/or 3D modelling. In addition, the candidate has fluent German and English language skills and is highly motivated, reliable, accurate, and has high level of initiative as well as excellent teamwork skills.
