Faculty Positions at the Department of Electronic Engineering at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), Valparaíso, Chile This call is aimed at filling 3 (three) full-time faculty positions for the Department of Electronic Engineering at UTFSM in the field of Computer Engineering (Code 16-01-46) and Telematics (Code 16-01-47). The successful candidate is expected to be a competent and highly motivated academic who will contribute to the strengthening of teaching in undergraduate and graduate (Master and Doctorate) programs, to do research, and to participate in innovation activities. The University Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria (USM) has a strong emphasis on research and on scientific and technological education. USM is consistently ranked among the top three engineering schools of the country, it is ranked first place nationally, second in South America and 275 worldwide in the Times Higher Education Ranking 2014 (1). In the QS World University ranking in Engineering, it is ranked in 3rd place within Chile (2). According to América Economía, it is ranked in 6th place in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 7th in 2014 (3). Valparaíso is a major city, seaport and university center as well as an important touristic attraction, being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Chile's cultural capital. According to the United Nations Development Programme, Chile is one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations, leading Latin American nations in human development, competitiveness, income per capita, globalization, economic freedom, and perception of low corruption (4). Furthermore, having a research project founded by the national scientific re-search agency Fondecyt generates an additional monthly payment during the entire period of the research project (2 or 3 years). Responsibilities The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the strengthening of teaching in undergraduate and graduate (Master and Doctorate) programs and to exhibit research and innovation capabilities. He will sign a performance agreement for a trial period of two years, which will specify a language training program to enable applicants not fluent in Spanish language to reach proficiency to be able to teach. The agreement will also establish teaching and research goals to be achieved in that time frame. Fulfilling the agreement goals will enable the candidate to participate on tenure track. The preferred specialization areas are differentiated according to the application field Computer Engineering, 1 academic position, (Code 16-01-46), The candidate should demonstrate skills in embedded systems, real-time systems, computer vision, robotics and/or mechatronics, or related areas with potential applications in the industry. The candidate must be willing and able to perform theoretical and experimental teaching in the above subjects. The successful candidates are expected to contribute to the strengthening of teaching in undergraduate and graduate (Master and Doctorate) programs and to exhibit research and innovation capabilities. Specialization in one of the following areas is highly desirable: wireless communications applications (layers ISO/OSI 2-7), web technology, or network administration, however, other Information Technology and Telecommunications areas will also be considered. Application requirements Candidates may be Chilean or foreign nationals, in possession of a doctoral degree or in the final stages of receiving it. They must also meet the following additional requirements: 1. The trajectory and expertise of the candidate must be consistent with the teaching and research duties in the fields advertised. 2. To have teaching abilities and to be willing to teach at undergraduate level (theoretical and experimental). 3. To be willing to participate in training programs aimed at the use of modern educa-tional methodologies and also in the planning of the engineering education curriculum. 4. Exhibit demonstrable results in the creation of knowledge, through publications in ISI indexed journals, international conferences and patents. 5. Writing and speaking proficiency in English and Spanish. Applicants not fluent in Spanish should show willingness to acquire within one year sufficient proficiency to be able to teach and interact with students. Undergraduate and graduate grade transcripts. 4. Certificates of diplomas and degrees. 5. Contact data (postal and email) of two senior academics who are willing to provide academic and personal references. One of the referees should be the Ph.D. thesis advisor. These references will be requested directly by the Head of the Department. Selection Procedure The Electronic Engineering Department will select three candidates for a shortlist for each available position, from the set of all applicants satisfying the advertised requirements. Those in the shortlists will be interviewed by a Selection Committee. All those in the shortlists should offer a public lecture on a topic chosen in agreement between the applicant and the Department (via video-conference if a visit to UTFSM cannot be arranged). The Selection Committee will prioritize the shortlist, to be submitted to the University authority for the final decision.
