Lecturer in Data Science

The Faculty of Science at the University of Auckland is the largest and most highly ranked science faculty in New Zealand. The Faculty of Science is ranked among the 90 science facilities worldwide by the QS World University Rankings. The 10 departments and schools that form the Faculty of Science represent the breadth and diversity of science in our modern world.

The Department of Computer Science is the country's largest, most diverse, and most accomplished. The department was founded in 1981. It now has more than 40 academic staff and 80 research students, and an ever-growing cohort of undergraduates. The department is among the top 100 Computer Science Departments in the world according to the 2014 QS World University Rankings.

We are currently looking for two top early career academics to join our diverse and internationally renowned Department of Computer Science as Lecturers in Data Science. The positions are part of an appealing environment of existing competencies within data science which include undergraduate and postgraduate programmes run jointly with the Department of Statistics in which R was developed in the mid-90s, and an internationally respected group of academics undertaking pure and applied research in this domain.

The successful appointees will have a PhD, demonstrated excellence in research, and a commitment to high quality research-informed teaching. The ideal candidate would have a research program that complements and builds on existing areas of strength within the department (http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz).

The first position is open to applicants who have been conducting research in the field of data science with a focus towards data management including but not limited to big data, conceptual data modelling, crowd sourcing, data cleaning, data integration, data mining, data models, data provenance, data quality, data semantics, data visualization, data warehousing, database design, distributed and parallel databases, graph data management, information extraction, knowledge discovery, query languages, uncertain databases.

The second position is open to applicants who have been conducting research in the field of data science with a focus towards artificial intelligence including but not limited to cognitive systems, data mining, integration, knowledge representation, logic, machine learning, multi-agent systems, natural language processing, optimization, pattern recognition, planning, reasoning, robotics and perception, search, statistical learning.

For both positions, the main criteria for candidates is excellence in research, as well as the ability to be a highly effective teacher of both undergraduate and graduate students.

The appointees will be expected to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in their specialist area, at introductory levels more widely, and to engage in research and publication both personally and through the supervision of research students. The appointee would also be expected to seek research funding, to engage with the profession, to engage with industry, and to contribute to departmental service.
