10 PhD Scholarships

The ARC Research Hub for Nanoscience Based Construction Materials Manufacturing (NANOCOMM) and Centre for Built Infrastructure Research (CBIR) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is calling for applications for PhD scholarships commencing in 2017. There are 10 research scholarships available. These research scholarships are sponsored by the following industry partners:

  • Cement Australia
  • Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia
  • Cement and Concrete Association of New Zealand
  • Roads and Maritime Services
  • Wuhan Zhihe Technology Development

Students in a PhD program within CBIR will engage in commercial research with an industry partner as a co-supervisor. Local students with relevant industry experience will be considered favourably and have the option of undertaking part-time research while maintaining their role within industry. Students seeking to publish existing and future research of a scholarly calibre will be supported to do so. Successful candidates will enjoy the strong industry and academic linkagesthat CBIR has built both domestically and internationally,to support their career aspirations.

Candidates with expertise in any of the following fields are invited to apply.Specific research projects include:

Materials Science/Chemistry

  • Balanced alkali limit in cement for alkali-silica reaction risk-free concrete production
  • Development of protocols for use to mitigate potential ASR

Civil Engineering

  • Development of smart concreteand nano-geopolymer composites for use in underground concrete structures
    • Design and development ofprecast geopolymer concretecomponents for use in structural applications
    • Durability of geopolymer concretecomponents for use in structural applications

Structural Engineering

  • Residual load capacity and modelling failure mechanisms of alkali-silica reaction affected concrete structures
  • Health monitoring and capacity assessment of alkali-silica reaction affected field concrete structures
  • Assessment of deterioration of concrete structures by alkali-silica reaction and chloride-induced corrosion
  • Structural reliability analysis of alkali-silica reaction affected concrete structures

Value and Duration

Successful candidates will receive a scholarship valued at $25,849 per annum for three years to assist with general living costs.

International students will be nominated for a UTS International Research Scholarship (IRS), which covers tuition fees for three years. Tuition fees for domestic students are currently covered under the Research Training Scheme (RTS) https://education.gov.au/research-training-scheme.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have:

  • completed a relevant bachelor degree in chemistry, materials science, geology, civil engineering or structural engineering with first class honours, or be regarded by the university as having an equivalent level of attainment or minimum 5 years’ relevant industry experience;
  • familiarity with the value and use of a wide range of construction materials;
  • relevant experiencein analytical instrumentation, materials or structures testing or numerical modelling;and
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Selection Criteria

CBIR is calling for highly qualified and motivated chemists, material scientists, geologists,civil orstructural engineers to apply. To be eligible for ascholarship, applicants:

  • must demonstrate academic merit in previous undergraduate (including honours) or postgraduate study; and
  • submit along with their application a research proposal relevant to one of the research projects described (limit 2000 words)

The successful candidate will be working on their research program at both the UTS and industry members’ laboratories in Sydney and must be available to commence by March 2017.

Candidates must lodge their applications by email(including a full transcript of results of all subjects studied) by 6 January 2017 to:
