Position Description:

 

The School of Computer Science in the College of Physical and Engineering Science at the University of Guelph is seeking applications for two two-year contractually limited and teaching focused assistant professor positions, with an expected start date between May 1 and September 1, 2017.

 

Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent at the time of appointment, in computer science or a related field. Successful candidates are expected to devote most of their time to teaching, and some time to service and research.

 

Teaching Requirements

 

The School aims to attract exceptional educators who will demonstrate an enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching and supervision, deliver excellent teaching, inspire students, support and enhance the learning process and student experience. The applicants will be willing to teach computer science courses across a range of topics and levels and will be willing to develop innovative and challenging courses. In particular, the applicants should be comfortable teaching any of the School’s first or second year courses, whether the subject matter is conceptual or hands-on/applied, in either classroom or distance education format.The successful applicants will assume the teaching of up to 5 course sections per year. On-campus courses are usually taught between 8:30am and 5:30pm, although some courses may be taught after 5:30pm.

 

Candidates should have previous teaching experience, at least as a Graduate Teaching Assistant or Sessional Lecturer, and they should demonstrate a consistent record of high quality teaching based on formal teaching evaluations or teaching awards.

 

Research Requirements

 

Candidates should have a record of submission and acceptance to peer reviewed journals and conferences. Funded research or research on education is a plus.

 

Service Requirements

 

The successful candidates are expected to serve on undergraduate committees, and to help shape, nurture, and enrich the curriculum.

 

About the School

 

The School of Computer Science is currently comprised of 22 faculty members, 8 staff and technicians, about 850 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students (MSc and PhD). It is expected to grow significantly in the next few years.The School offers two majors, Computer Science and Software Engineering, as well as a three-year General Program. The honours majors are available with a Co-operative Education option.
