2 Postdoc positions in Photonic Integrated Circuits
Within the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark, two Postdoc positions in the field of photonic integration are available as soon as possible.
The first position focuses on the development of ultra-low noise photonic microwave oscillators (~20 GHz), realized on a photonic integrated circuit. The most accurate microwave oscillators known today are based on photonics. However, these oscillators are typically laboratory-based. Recent breakthroughs in photonic integrated circuit technology, such as high-Q resonators on a chip, indicate that we should now be able to integrate such laboratory systems on an optical chip.
The second position focuses on the development of ultra-sensitive gas sensors, specifically ammonia, for environmental monitoring. Following the same rationale as for the first position, these sensors will be realized on a photonic integrated circuit, ultimately leading to the most compact environmental sensors.
There is funding for 2 years of employment. In case further external funding is procured within the academic area the candidate is estimated obviously qualified for, an extension can be possible for up to a total maximum of 4 years employment as a post doc.
Our group takes a fabless approach, which means that we focus on the simulation, design and characterization of circuits for the selected applications, leaving the fabrication to so-called foundry platforms, e.g., as offered through JePPIX (www.jeppix.eu).
Aarhus University is a leading research university, which is in the top-100 on several major global university rankings. The Department of Engineering has only recently been established and is growing very rapidly in terms of students, staff and research output, thereby offering very nice opportunities for pioneering efforts. You will actively be involved in reaching out to industry to transfer this photonic technology and in acquiring new projects based on this work.
Qualifications and specific competences
Applicants must have:
• a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or similar, with a strong publication track record in fields relevant to the position; • a solid background in opto-electronics / photonics; • experimental skills in optics, photonics and/or electronics and microwave technology; • the ability and willingness to explore the fundamental limits of photonic integrated circuit performance; • the ability to work with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds; • strong communication and collaboration skills.
Place of Employment and Place of Work
The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work is Science and Technology, Finlandsgade 22, DK-8200 Aarhus N, Denmark.
For further information on the position please contact Associate Professor Martijn Heck at: mheck@eng.au.dk
Application procedure
Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.
