The Department of Technology Systems (ITS) is a newly established department at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. ITS has taken over the activities at UNIK from January 2017. The Institute is located in the Kjeller Research Park, which is one of the largest research and development centers in Norway. ITS collaborates with the research institutes at Kjeller, and with industry, while it is also tightly integrated with complementary activities at UiO in Oslo. The department has two sections: section for energy systems and section for autonomous systems and sensor technologies. An important goal of ITS is to provide wider opportunities at UiO within applied technologies.
Associate Professor in Energy Systems
The Department of Technology Systems at the University of Oslo invites applications for an associate professorship in energy systems. We are seeking a candidate with clear scientific and technological visions, good educational, administrative and interpersonal skills and abilities to establish and lead research projects.
The Department of Technology Systems (ITS) has been established at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, from January 1, 2017, and is located at Kjeller. The goal is to create a powerful technology environment for research, education and innovation in close interaction with the other research and technology communities at Kjeller, and tightly integrated with complementary activities at the UiO Blindern campus. The research at ITS will have a system focus and is expected to be at a higher TRL level (Technology Readiness Level) than most of the other activities at the faculty.
The Department of Technology Systems has two sections; section for energy systems and section for autonomous systems and sensor technologies It is expected to be significant interdisciplinary overlap between the two sections.
It is planned that the section for energy systems in the coming three-year period shall comprise a total of about four full-time positions, and about 10-15 part-time positions with scientists from the research institutes at Kjeller or industry.
Description of the research areas in the section for energy systems
The dominant trend in the electrical energy supply system is the integration of several new types of renewable energy sources and energy storage in the electricity grid. A system with a large number of renewable energy sources with considerable variation in output over the day and over the year, together with conventional energy production, will constitute a complex system. The research areas at the section for energy systems will encompass component technologies for renewable energy systems, and how these components can and should work together with conventional energy production in a grid. Components may include solar cells, wind turbines, batteries, hydrogen, other energy storage, fuel cells etc. The grid system may include a collection of buildings, a city or town, a factory, a large renewable power plant with local energy storage, or similar.
It will be a goal to develop cooperation with existing or new commercial and public companies.
Specific information about the position:
The research area for the position comprises complex energy systems as described above, where a significant proportion of renewable energy sources and energy storage interact with conventional power generation in the power grid. We envisage that the research area will have a focus on the physical system (i.e. hardware) and thus complement the activities within system software (energy informatics) at the Department of Computer Science, and energy modeling at the Department of Mathematics.
The Institute leads the planning of a new master's degree program in sustainable energy systems at the faculty, including a possible extension to a bachelor's program within the same area. An important task for the position will be to develop these programs, including course portfolio, in conjunction with the course portfolios in other relevant study programs at the faculty.
The successful applicant will initiate and lead research, supervise research students, participate in the teaching of students and examination work at all levels within the relevant subject areas, and will also undertake administrative duties at the department. The person appointed can also be requested to undertake administrative and other duties at the faculty.
Qualifications
To qualify for appointment the applicant must have completed a PhD and be able to document scientific work in energy systems, according to the research area for the position as described above. The successful candidate must have basic pedagogical or educational competence. A candidate who by the time of appointment cannot document such qualifications must acquire these within two years. Pedagogical qualifications beyond the basic requirement can give a competitive advantage in the ranking of academically / scientifically qualified applicants.
Teaching is given in Norwegian and English. Foreign language speakers will be expected to be able to teach in Norwegian within a certain time after being appointed.
