Professorship W3 for Computational Material Design Helmut-Schmidt-Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg

Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H) intends to strategically promote excellent research in specific focus areas that address critical societal challenges and ensure future growth. The Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering also aim to strengthen further their joint research activities on logistics and defence, energy, and materials. To fulfil this ambition, the faculties invite outstanding applications for three new full professorship positions, in the fields of high-performance computing for advanced multiscale simulations, computational material design, and laser technology. The positions will be filled as soon as possible.

Prerequisites for the employment are a university degree, an outstanding doctoral thesis and an excellent publication record in peer-reviewed, renowned international journals. Strong academic research record of international level, a clear commitment to teaching and the demonstrated ability to lead a research group are expected. In evaluating the candidates’ performance, the selection committee will give adequate consideration to the career stage and the personal circumstances of the candidates. The applicants should document their success in winning competitive research grants from national and international funding organizations, and the evidence of their recognition in their respective, national and international research communities. The successful candidates will be expected to establish and be active in collaborations with the main research centers in their areas and contribute to their future development. Experience with the leadership roles as a coordinator/initiator of interdisciplinary cooperation with university and non-university research groups is expected.

Professorship W3 for Computational Material Design

(reference number: MB-156)

HSU/UniBw H aims to further strengthen the research focus on high-performance materials and materials processing technologies. An integrated approach of computational and experimental methods is the key to accelerate the understanding of fundamental material effects and to facilitate their efficient translation into components with tailored functionalities for different applications. The successful applicant should have an internationally recognized expertise in the field of computational material science and engineering. An excellent research record, ideally in one of the following areas, is desired:

  • Computational methods for designing complex material systems, including virtual material design and simulation of processing technologies for alloys or composites (modeling of thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transitions, finite elements)
  • Information driven interface design for tailored properties, reaching beyond bulk properties via functionalization of surfaces and control of interfaces, e.g. to facilitate particular (laser) light-matter interactions for metamaterials or in additive manufacturing. (ab initio methods, molecular dynamics)
  • Scale bridging and integration of computational methods, to understand the relationship between structure, micro-structure and properties, as well as to support the integration of functionalities on different scales (link molecular dynamics and continuum methods, multi-scale simulation)

Candidates are expected to establish a new group with strong relationships to the advanced materials cluster at HSU/UniBw H (materials and processing technology, mechanics, numerical mathematics, thermodynamics and molecular simulations), and the other new professorships, to address general, fundamental scientific questions, as well as specific application problems, relevant to research partners in the metropolitan region, including the joint activities within the Hamburg Center for High Performance Materials (ZHM Hamburg) on additive manufacturing, and within the cluster Hamburg Aviation.

The new professorship will be fully involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities. This will include the Bachelor and Master programs of the faculties, in particular the English curricula Engineering Science: Defence Systems. Apart from the core modules, the successful applicants will be expected to run some advanced courses on the topics related to their specific fields of research.

The Faculties of Mechanical and of Electrical Engineering offer excellent equipment and infrastructure facilities, collegiate atmosphere to stimulate collaboration and opportunities to actively shape future research strategies as well as develop innovative teaching concepts. The successful candidates will have full access to this excellent infrastructure and inspiring research and learning environment. The positions are supported by a generous budget for personnel and equipment costs.

The Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg offers bachelor and master degree courses for officer candidates and officers based on a trimester system with a shortened standard period of study and complemented by interdisciplinary course elements (ISA). In individual cases, scholarship holders from industry are accepted.

The holder of the position is expected to prepare students for occupations in and outside the Federal Armed Forces that require the application of academic knowledge and methods and to additionally assume functions in the field of further education and ISA teaching.

The required qualifications and service law status of professors are defined in the Federal Civil Service Act. Applicants under the age of 50 on the day of their appointment can become civil servants. Applicants50 years old or older at the date of employment, who do not yet hold a civil servant status, will qualify only for an employee status.

Applicants are also expected to have competence in gender equality matters.

Applications from women are explicitly welcome. Women of equal aptitude, qualification and professional merit who apply for positions in areas in which they are underrepresented will be given preferential consideration unless reasons regarding a fellow applicant as a person outweigh.

Applications from disabled persons are explicitly welcome. Severely disabled persons and equals who are of equal aptitude will be given preferential consideration. They will only be required to have a minimum of physical aptitude. Individual disability-related constraints will only rule out preferential consideration being given if certain abilities are mandatory for the position to be filled.

Full applications (motivation letter, curriculum vitae, statement on research interests and plans, lists of publications, funding and teaching record, and five most important publications) should be sent exclusively in electronic format only, quoting reference number by 10 th November 2017 to:
