ICT is one of the key focus areas of the University of Oulu since the 1990’s, and the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE, http://www.oulu.fi/itee) was founded in 2014 to consolidate expertise in the field. From the beginning of 2016, the faculty of ITEE encompasses 11 research groups in the fields Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and Information Processing Science, with world-class research and rising research groups in the areas of machine vision, wireless communications, high-speed electronics and optoelectronics, ICT electronics components, ubiquitous computing, empirical software engineering, and ICT in health and wellbeing.

 

In 2017, ITEE had over 2000 BSc and MSc students in 3 degree programs and 3 international Master’s programs, personnel of 430 (including PhD students), and a budget of 31 MEUR (of which 52% external). The faculty and its predecessors have produced roughly 5000 MScs to local and global industry.

Professor in Wireless Communications Networks

 

Job Title, Field and Location

 

The professorship within the Centre for Wireless Communications – Networks and Systems (CWC-NS) research group of the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) will be filled starting July 1st, 2018 at the earliest, the field of the position being wireless Communications networking in general and with special emphasis on research and teaching in areas such as 4G and emerging 5G packet core and its’ functions, network functions virtualization (NFV), management and orchestration of NFVs (MANO), software defined networking (SDN), mobile edge computing (MEC) and novel virtualized services therein. The professor is also responsible for providing teaching in basics of communications networking.

 

The position is initially for five years and the continuation will be based on a performance assessment performed at the end of the five year period. The professorship is either an associate or full professor based on the merits of the selected candidate. 

 

The post is very fundamental considering the teaching and research activities of the research group and faculty, taking into account the development needs of the surrounding industry in the ICT sector. The field of the post will also complement the research and teaching goals of the unit.

 

The Centre for Wireless Communications consists of two intertwined research groups, namely Centre for Wireless Communication – Radio Technologies (CWC-RT) and Centre for Wireless Communications – Networks and Systems (CWC-NS). Altogether the two CWC research groups consists of 9 professor. In addition, there are 12 senior research fellows, 4 lecturers, 20 post-doctoral research fellows, 7 research assistants, 3 assistant personnel and 76 doctoral students with a total number of 132 persons. The annual budget of CWC is approximately 10 million euros, of which about 75 % is external competed research funding.

 

The research of the CWC research groups covers all major topics in Wireless communications and networking especially in cellular and Internet of Things (IoT) domains including e.g. transceiver and radio frequency (RF) technologies, radio channels, antennas and propagation, optimization and algorithms, wireless internetworking, wireless system design, integration, verification and validation and wireless applications in areas such as industrial internet, medical and health, smart energy grids, transport, security and defense, and public safety.


Job Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Language Proficiency

 

Under section 33 of the Universities Act, a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific or artistic work, give education based on it and follow developments in science or art and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his or her field.

 

The required qualifications for the post of professor include a doctoral degree, high quality scientific or artistic competence, experience in supervising scientific research, the ability to give high quality education based on research and to supervise final theses, as well as evidence of international collaboration in his or her field of research.

 

When assessing the applicant’s merits, issues taken into consideration include scientific publications and other research results with scientific or artistic value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the skill to create teaching material, other teaching merits, the demonstration lecture, and the doctoral theses the applicant has supervised.

 

In addition to this, the following merits will be taken into consideration as well: the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, practical familiarity with the field in question, success in acquiring supplementary funding, scientific work abroad and international activities.

 

The applicant’s practical familiarity with the field in question is particularly meritorious.

 

The teaching language at the University of Oulu is Finnish, although it is also possible to teach in English.


Salary

The salary will be based on the levels 8 – 10 of the demand level chart for teaching and research personnel of the salary system of Finnish universities.


Application Procedure

1) A brief curriculum vitae written in English, compiled in accordance with the instructions given at the end of this document;

 

2) A list of publications classified as follows: (1) articles in international peer-reviewed journals, (2) articles in international peer-reviewed volumes of scientific significance and articles in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, (3) articles in domestic peer reviewed journals, (4) articles in domestic peer-reviewed volumes of scientific significance and articles in domestic peer-reviewed conference proceedings, (5) scientific monographs, (6) other original publications, e.g., articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings with no peer-review process, and in university or department publications.

 

3) Teaching merits of relevance to the post concerned are requested to be presented in the form of a teaching portfolio, or a comparable document; in the portfolio (or other document), table of contents presented on page 6 should be followed.

 

4) A brief research and action plan in English;

 

5) At most fifteen (15) publications and other works, to be sent to the referees for assessment and to be taken into consideration upon evaluation of the eligibility and merits. The applicant is required to indicate these 15 publications in the list of publications.

 

Before being officially accepted for the position, the successful applicant must present to the faculty his or her original degree diplomas or certified copies thereof, as well as a signed curriculum vitae.

 

Reviewer Assessment

 

The faculty will select a minimum of two reviewers to be consulted regarding the selection process. When selecting the reviewers, the respective specializations of the applicants in the field are taken into consideration, and general fairness is also observed.

 

The applicants will be informed about the selection of the reviewers. Finland’s laws for public administration will be invoked and applied for assessing any potential disqualification of an expert. When the reviewers hand in their statements, these will be sent to the applicants immediately.

 

Demonstration Lecture and Interview

 

The recruitment committee will interview the applicants that they consider best and arrange the demonstration lectures when necessary.

 

Official Employment

 

On the basis of a justified proposal from the recruitment committee, the Dean will submit his proposal to the Rector, who will make the final decision concerning the employment of the successful applicant.
