Örebro University is now investing in 18 career-development positions for promising junior researchers. As an associate senior lecturer, you are offered great opportunities, for a period of 4-6 years, to acquire further qualifications in both research and teaching, making you eligible for promotion to the position of senior lecturer. The associate senior lecturer position involves research of up to 70% as well as a specially designed development programme with leadership training, courses on teaching and learning in higher education, communication training, and courses on writing funding applications. In addition to having access to existing research infrastructure, the position holders are offered special grants for own research and development. If you have high ambitions within both research and teaching, Örebro University would like to offer you the best conditions for a future career with us.

As part of this University-wide scheme, Örebro University is now looking for an associate senior lecturer in mathematics, specialising in computational mathematics, for fixed-term employment of 4-6 years at the School of Science and Technology.

The person we are looking for has the ambition to continue to develop as a researcher and university teacher while contributing to the continued development of the research and teaching established at Örebro University in connection with the launch of our Masters of Science in Engineering a little over a year ago. At the School of Science and Technology, internationally renowned research is pursued in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics, computer science, and mechanical engineering. Our research and study programmes are utilised and of benefit to society within fields such as industry, mining, environmental analysis, drug development, instrument and materials development, as well as in schools. We pursue research in several areas of mathematics. The emphasis is on computational mathematics where the focus over recent years has been on inverse problems. Within the research team, there is also cooperation between computational mathematicians and researchers in condensed matter theory. In addition to the Mathematics programme, the Department of Mathematics offers courses on two MSc in Engineering and five BSc in Engineering programmes, as well as on the Teacher Education Programmes for primary, secondary and upper secondary school.

Duties and responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities involve research, teaching and collaboration. During the period of employment, an associate senior lecturer shall develop their autonomy as a researcher and acquire further qualifications in terms of both research and teaching skills to meet the criteria for a position as a senior lecturer. An associate senior lecturer shall also contribute to the University’s development.

The research focus for the position is computational mathematics, ideally with a specialisation that can be linked to condensed matter physics/theory in a wider sense. Other important duties and responsibilities include applying for external research funding, promoting internationalisation and collaboration, and contributing to the development of the research team in computational mathematics. Duties and responsibilities may also entail supervision of doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. The associate senior lecturer shall also contribute to the teaching of mathematics on the BSc and MSc in Engineering programmes, as well as on the Mathematics Programme.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer are candidates who have been awarded a doctoral degree or have the corresponding research competence. Priority should be given to candidates who have been awarded their doctoral degree or acquired the corresponding competence no more than five years before the application deadline. Candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree prior to that should also be considered, if special grounds exist. Such grounds may comprise leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Assessment criteria

  • When filling this associate senior lecturer position, the main focus will be on the candidates’ research expertise. A requirement for employment is solid qualifications within computational mathematics or similar subject fields, such as computational physics, numerical analysis or large-scale computations in engineering or science, which should be demonstrated through the candidate’s own research. In addition to publication in scientific journals, national and international research collaborations, a demonstrated ability to secure external funding, and an interest in cooperating across disciplines are considered additional qualifications.
  • Teaching expertise shall be examined and assessed based on the candidates’ teaching qualifications, which shall be well-documented and accounted for in a teaching portfolio.
  • Importance is also attached to experience and qualifications in terms of collaboration with society, of which the University is a part, as well as in terms of national and international experience and mobility.
  • Leadership skills are assessed mainly based on the candidates’ leadership experience and qualifications from within research and education.
  • Great importance is also attached to suitability, that is, personal characteristics required to perform the duties and responsibilities at hand, to cooperate with other members of staff, and to contribute to the development of Örebro University’s operations. The person we are looking for has good interpersonal and cooperative skills, power of initiative, an interest in development efforts, and the aim set for a career within academia.
  • Good communicative skills, in speech and in writing and in both Swedish and English, is mandatory. If a candidate does not meet either of the language criteria, they may still be appointed on the condition that they dedicate themself to acquiring the knowledge required, in the long term, to be able to teach and supervise in both Swedish and English.

Good communicative skills in Swedish, in speech and in writing, at such a level that is necessary for the candidate to be able to perform frequent duties and responsibilities within research, teaching and administration are also required.

The application for promotion to a position as senior lecturer shall be submitted to the faculty no later than six months before the position as an associate senior lecturer reaches the end of its term. Such a promotion will entail employment until further notice as a senior lecturer.

The contract may be renewed, for a maximum of two years, if, due to the associate senior lecturer’s sick leave, parental leave, or other special grounds, more time is required for the aim of the employment to be fulfilled.
