Position Description

The Department of Statistics at Harvard University invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in statistics. The postdoctoral fellow will be directed by Prof. Natesh Pillai and Dr. Marie-Abele Bind. We are looking for candidates to work on inference of stochastic differential equations driven by jump processes and diffusions. Stochastic differential equations are important for an increasing number of complex physical, technical and biological systems. For a model to describe the future evolution of the system, it should 1) capture the inherently nonlinear behavior of the system; 2) provide means to accommodate randomness due to measurement and approximation errors. This project is intended to develop robust and computational approaches in the inference of stochastic (-integro) differential equations that could accommodate variables that are non-observable and will further look at methods that are capable of bridging the gap between statistical and physical modelling.

Basic Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in statistics and stochastic (partial) differential equations. We seek a self-driven, creative thinker with strong statistical skills to help develop statistical methods and software, collaborate on grant writing and publications, and present at international conferences. A PhD in Statistics or directly related field is required at the time of appointment.

Additional Qualifications

The successful candidate should be comfortable with advanced statistical and computational programming and have some background in missing data including multiple imputation, Bayesian modeling, time-series and state space modeling. A publication record that demonstrates candidate’s capacities is also desirable. Postdoctoral fellow will engage in high-level research and be involved in analysis and publication on projects currently underway at the Harvard Statistics Department and will also be encouraged to maintain an independent set of research interests. The role will be supported by an array of resources at Harvard University and funded by NIH.

Special Instructions

Send application materials (resume, publication list, statement of research interests) and the names and contact information for three references to Prof. Pillai (pillai@fas.harvard.edu) or Dr. Bind (ma.bind@mail.harvard.edu). This position starts on July 1st 2018. The posting will remain open through January 15, 2018.
