General nature or purpose of the job:
The CTYOnline Instructor, Mathematics will mainly be responsible for teaching high school and college level online math courses, including AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC (Calc I, II), Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus (Calc III) and Ordinary Differential Equations.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing established learning objectives. Interact independently with students using distance education technologies, primarily Moodle, Adobe Connect, Skype and e-mail.
- Arranging & holding live review sessions with students and actively checking in on all assigned students
- Provide timely feedback to students and their parents on coursework and progress.
- Promptly replying to emails, providing detailed feedback on exams according to a rubric Communicate with students, parents, IT, program administrators and supervisor to resolve any course related issues. Phone calls to parents and schools are required.
- Additional duties include assisting with the development of course related materials; updating and developing curriculum; participating in new course development; working closely with program managers on course related issues; assisting with the training and supervision of other instructors; and working as a team member to provide support to other CTYOnline instructors, as necessary.
- Submit hours worked via established system according to schedule provided by CTY.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in mathematics or related field with two years teaching, tutoring experience in mathematics; Master’s degree is strongly preferred. Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Two years teaching or tutorial experience in Advanced Placement and college level mathematics.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
Computer or other special needs for the position:
- Must have a computer with broadband Internet access
- Familiarity with Online education technologies a plus, such as Moodle, Adobe Connect and Skype.
- Familiarity with online course management systems and Microsoft Office Suite, experience with LaTeX, and proficiency with Gmail & related Google Apps as well as the ability to find and use free online tools related to each course.
Physical requirements for the job:
- Ability to access and transmit information using a computer
- Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery
- The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone or Skype and possibly face to face with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings
- Work hours vary and are flexible; including weekends and evenings as determined with supervisor.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
