The Centre for Image Analysis has a long tradition of theoretical and applied research and graduate education in computerized image analysis and scientific visualization. The focus is on image processing as such, but also on developing better methods, algorithms and systems for applications within primarily life sciences, medicine, and digital humanities. Duties/Project description: Computational microscopy is an emerging technology which extends the capabilities of optical microscopy with the help of computers. Thanks to the immense progress in computer power, previously intractable optical reconstruction problems can today be solved using of-the-shelf hardware. One such example is a novel imaging technique called Fourier ptychographic microscopy. By aggregating information from many images of a specimen illuminated at different angles and solving an ill-posed inverse problem, it is possible to reconstruct an image with higher resolution than what otherwise would be possible with the given optics. The technique provides high-resolved wide field-of-view complex- valued images and also permits 3D reconstruction of thin samples; all this without any moving parts and relying on comparably cheap components. Fourier ptychography can be easily implemented on a conventional optical microscope by replacing the illumination source by a standard LED array.

 

This project aims to advance the state of the art of light microscopy. Through exploration of illumination modulation techniques as well as use of methods from deep learning (to learn the optics an/or appropriate regularization) and compressed sensing (for optimized sampling) together with GPU implementations of modern optimization techniques, we aim to reach fast and reliable super-resolution reconstruction. This multidisciplinary project combines physics (optics) and mathematical optimization theory with computer science and recent results of machine learning in order to solve imaging problems which are relevant for medical and biomedical tasks. The research focus will be on theoretical development, but always tightly connected with practical application and in collaboration with other projects at the Centre for Image Analysis.

 

Requirements: The candidate must have (at the time of the start of the project) a Master of Science degree in mathematics, engineering physics, computer science, or related areas relevant to the PhD project topics. Excellent study results, in particular in mathematics subjects, good programming skills, good communication skills, good command of both spoken and written English, are required. Expertise and experience in GPU programming, machine learning, and digital image analysis are meriting. Prior knowledge of Swedish is not required.

 

Appointment period: The position is for four years, but may be extended by teaching and department duties (at most 20%). The PhD education also includes participation in relevant courses.

The Swedish working climate emphasizes an open atmosphere, with active discussions involving both junior and senior staff. All PhD students and Postdocs are full employees, with standard salaries and five weeks of paid holiday. The starting salary of PhD student is currently 27400SEK/month (around 2700Euro/month). Spouses of employees are entitled to work permits, and, after being awarded a PhD degree, non-EU-citizens are eligible for permanent work permits. Healthcare is free after a small co-pay and the university provides additional occupational health services and subsidizes athletic costs, such as a gym membership. The parental benefits in Sweden are among the best in the world, including extensive parental leave (for both parents), paid time off to care for sick children, and affordable daycare.
