Established Professor in Statistical Science, Full Time, Permanent Position
The appointed Professor will be expected to provide forward looking leadership in theoretical and applied aspects of Statistical Science that align with, and build upon, existing areas of expertise in NUI Galway,. This appointment will further enhance the national and global profile of Statistics at NUI Galway. The successful candidate will have an outstanding international track record in research, teaching, and supervision, and substantial experience in academic management including staff development and mentorship. S/he will have demonstrated capacity for collaboration and inter-disciplinary engagement, both within the University environment and with key external stakeholders, including private and public enterprises, prospective graduate employers and international institutions. The post holder will be expected to exploit the significant opportunities and synergies that currently exist for development of research and education in Statistical Science at NUI Galway, particularly given the location in NUI Galway of the Science Foundation Ireland research centres: Insight Centre for Data Analytics (https://nuig.insight-centre.org/); and CÚRAM the Centre for Research in Medical Devices (http://www.nuigalway.ie/curam/), as well as the Health Research Board Clinical Research Facility (http://www.nuigalway.ie/hrb_crfg/).
The Established Professor of Statistical Science position is located in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics, which is one of four schools in the College of Science at NUI Galway. The statistics discipline in the School has a consistent record of success in attracting grant funding, in PhD supervision, and in delivery of high-quality methodological and applied research in statistical modelling, biostatistics, environmetrics and data science. The undergraduate teaching activity of the discipline includes the provision of the statistical components of all degree programmes in the mathematical sciences, as well as modules in Statistics for students of Science, Engineering and Commerce. A newly created Data Science pathway will be offered to first year students in the Science programme from 2018.
The appointed Professor will work to support existing teaching and research programmes in the School and to harness the potential for growth in Statistical Science research activity, taught programmes and student numbers. S/he will work to build links more generally across the University, including within the School and with cognate areas in Science, Computer Science, Medicine and Health Sciences, Business and Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. S/he will engage with relevant parties on the future development of statistical consulting services across the university, and will support the development of NUI Galway's three strategic pillars: MedTEch, ICT and Emerging Creative Industries. The post holder will be willing and able to serve fixed terms in senior leadership roles such as Head of School.
