Postdoctoral Research Assistant - QMUL17724 Overview: Motivation for the Research: There is considerable interest in using the millimetre wave spectrum within future generation mobile networks. We seek an expert in millimetre wave antenna design to work on an EPSRC funded project. The project will help to unlock the potential of millimetre wave spectrum, by developing novel millimetre wave antennas, capable of analogue/digital beamforming, along with phase shifters. Ideally the candidate will also have experience of feed network design and be willing to work on microfluidic channel structures for reconfigurable antennas. About the Opportunity: The candidate is expected to be a member of Whitespace Machine Communication Lab (WMC: http://wmc.eecs.qmul.ac.uk). The WMC lab is part of the Antennas & Electromagnetics Group which is located in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at QMUL. We are well known for our pioneering research and pride ourselves on our world-class projects. We are 6th in the UK for quality of electronic engineering research (REF 2014). The candidate will join a research project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in collaboration with the University of Birmingham and 4 industry partners. About You: The candidate is expected to hold a first-class honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a closely aligned discipline. The candidate should hold a PhD degree (or be close to completion) in microwave engineering preferably focusing on antennas. The following are amongst the essential requirements for this post: Strong grasp of the background theory relating to microwave and millimetre wave antennas and associated feed network components. Experience of designing antennas and feed network components operating at millimetre wave frequencies and of modelling them using commercial computer software packages. Experience of submitting novel antennas and feed network components for fabrication and liaising with external suppliers and in-house technicians to ensure a successful outcome. Practical hands-on experience of making microwave or millimetre wave measurements. Enthusiasm and commitment to helping lead the project and take on associated administrative tasks. This will involve ensuring: that technical deliverables are produced on time, research is published in top journals and disseminated appropriately to a wide range of different audiences. Interest and enthusiasm for developing ground breaking research and new science. This is a full time post for 16 months starting 1 May 2019 or as soon as feasible after this date. The starting salary will be in the range of £33,615 - £37,411 per annum inclusive of London allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
