(IUA Salary Scale) Position Summary Medical devices have evolved from being stand-alone hardware-focused components of the clinical care process to include networked, wirelessly-reprogrammable implantable devices, or networked software applications. The increased focus on software-based/networked medical devices has altered the means of safety verification, and introduced novel security/privacy vulnerabilities. Verifying the safety, security and privacy of modern medical devices requires a radically new approach that directly addresses safety of networked systems, and introduces novel protocols for guaranteeing the security and privacy of all devices in the network. This work will provide a novel framework for ensuring security/privacy for networked medical devices and/or software, in that we will verify safety and security/privacy properties at the same time. Further, this will be done using a lightweight interface protocol, such that a device cannot be added to a system unless the protocol is satisfied (i.e., the device is compliant with regulatory requirements). The Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher will work under the supervision of Prof. Gregory Provan (UCC) in the area of Medical Devices software. This project will bring together necessary expertise from embedded systems, formal methods, security/privacy. Applicants with primary expertise in any of these areas will be considered. The Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher will be expected to make significant contributions to the direction and progress of the project in addition to working closely with the other team members and Prof. Provan, the project Principal Investigator.
