Doctoral Researcher / Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Communications or Electrical, Signal Engineering Tampere University

Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences form a higher education community that places faith in people and scientific knowledge. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en

The Wireless Communications and Positioning research group in the department of Electrical Engineering at Tampere University, Tampere, Finland, is an active and vibrant research group consisting of 6 professors, 10 senior researchers or post-docs, and around 25-30 postgraduate students. The group conducts high-impact theoretical and experimental research in topics spanning from wireless communications fundamentals and advanced radio access solutions to signal processing algorithms and radio positioning. We actively collaborate with leading research institutions and groups both nationally and internationally.

We are now kicking off a new Academy of Finland funded research project on the design and implementation of hybrid beamforming transmitters for future multi-antenna systems. The goal of the project is to radically improve the power-efficiency of such transmitters, through a joint design of the transmitter structure and beamforming/precoding algorithms. The ultimate goal of the project is to implement the transmitter on IC, together with our consortium partner group at Aalto University (Espoo, Finland), and thus verify the designs also experimentally.

We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral researcher or postdoctoral research fellow with a strong background in communications or electrical engineering, or signal processing.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The project aims to take advantage of hybrid amplitude/time based digital transmitter structures (e.g., polar, outphasing, and pulse-width modulation) that have finite amplitude and phase resolution, as well as the spatial degrees of freedom of the MIMO channel, and tailor the precoding algorithms to optimize power and spectral efficiencies. To this end, the main tasks within the project include:

  • Development of simulation models for the potential transmitter structures and the overall MIMO system
  • Developing signal processing algorithms for the transmitter, both for waveform processing and RF impairment mitigation
  • Design and development of precoding techniques with discrete optimization tools
  • Investigation and optimization of the transmitter structures in terms of power and spectral efficiencies
  • Studying the design and implementation tradeoffs in beamforming transmitters for large-scale MIMO systems
  • Participation in the prototype measurements of the fabricated ICs

You will work in collaboration with researchers from Aalto University, and possibly other laboratories abroad. Therefore, the work includes travelling and intercultural cooperation.

Participation in teaching courses at the department of Electrical Engineering is possible and encouraged.

REQUIREMENTS

Potential candidates hold an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline (communications engineering, electrical engineering, signal processing) and are enthusiastic to learn and study transmitter and precoder design, and the trade-offs in the design and implementation of real-world large-scale MIMO systems. They have good communication skills and are able to work in a team, while are also able to conduct scientific research at a high level. Experience in at least one of the following is considered an advantage: large-scale MIMO systems, MIMO precoder design, discrete optimization, power efficiency and/or spectral efficiency analysis, signal processing algorithm design and/or implementation.

Previous experience with the considered hybrid amplitude/time based transmitter structures is not necessary. We will give a good introduction to new-comers and guide you during the work.

WE OFFER

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period, until August 31st, 2023. The starting date is at the earliest October 1st, 2019, and at the latest, January 1st, 2020. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for a doctoral researcher is between 2400-3000 €, and for a postdoc between 3500-4000 €, depending on previous experience.

Tampere University offers many benefits to its employees, e.g., occupational health services, flexible working hours, high-quality sport services and affordable lunch choices on campus. International HR services offer their help with the official issues in settling in Finland and Tampere. Tampere region is one of the fastest growing city areas in Finland. Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and a traditional center of the Finnish industry. Today, the city is best known for its high-tech sector, with companies such as Nokia, Intel, Huawei, and Saab having research/development facilities here. Tampere is also the most popular city in Finland for higher education studies.
