The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Odense, invites applications for an assistant professor position in statistics. The position is expected to start in spring or summer 2020, although alternative starting dates can be negotiated. Application deadline: 30 September 2019.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in general mathematical statistics combined with advanced computational skills. All research areas are of interest, but we are articularly interested in candidates with expertise within any of the following fields:
● statistics of high-dimensional data,
● applied stochastic processes and/or empirical processes,
● computational statistics,
● Markov chain Monte Carlo methods,
● estimation theory.
The successful candidate should preferably have a PhD in statistics, though a PhD in another subject can also be considered if substantial documentation for research output in statistics is provided. Within the statistics group we have expertise in multivariate statistics and missing data, survival analysis, Bayesian inference, extreme value theory and asymptotic statistics. We welcome applicants who are interested in establishing links to the existing lines of research.
The statistics group offers teaching in statistics and probability theory to the mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics-economics and data science educations, and in addition performs service teaching for other units at the university.
The successful candidate is expected to provide excellent teaching and supervision at both BSc and MSc levels and to be able to contribute to the teaching of some of the following topics: survival analysis, advanced computational statistics and Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, stochastic processes, empirical processes, time series analysis, statistics for high-dimensional data, nonparametric statistics, linear and generalized linear mixed models, Bayesian statistics, as well as contributing to the study programme in Data Science (MSc).
Candidates for the position are expected to have considerable postdoctoral research experience. The assistant professorship position is for a duration of three years, whereupon a tenured associate professorship position is expected to be opened for which the assistant professor can apply.
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Danish is not a prerequisite for application. However, the primary administrative language at SDU is Danish and staff should therefore be willing to acquire Danish skills within a couple of years.
