Senior Lecturer in Human-Computer interaction

The Department of Informatics and Media is a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. The department conducts research and education within the fields of information systems, human-computer interaction (HCI) and media and communication studies. The HCI research at the department includes two main specializations: 1) Interaction design with focus on embodied interaction; and 2) Cross-media social interaction from a post digital perspective, for example studies of everyday technology with a critical and gender theoretical focus.

The teaching in HCI is conducted within the bachelor programmes in Information systems (180 hp) and Bachelor's Programme in Media, Communication and Journalism Studies (180 hp) and on advanced level within the master programmes in HCI and MCIT (Master's Programme in Management, Communication and IT)

Duties: The position includes teaching, examination, research and administration. Included within the area of teaching is planning and execution of courses, course responsibility, course administration, course development and supervision for the HCI courses within the above mentioned programmes. The employee is expected to actively search for external research funding and to follow the developments within the subject area and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. The HCI research is often practically focused and conducted within collaboration with different actors of the society.

Eligibility: To be eligible for appointment as senior lecturer, the applicant must hold a Ph.D. or possess equivalent scholarly competence. Further on, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching expertise and a general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.

It is required that the pedagogical, research and professional expertise is relevant for the positions subject content and the duties included in the employment.

Documented ability to teach in Swedish or English is a requirement. An applicant who is proficient in only one of these languages at the time of appointment is expected to be able to teach in the other language within two years.

Assessment: Equal importance will be given to teaching and research skills in the assessment of applicants.

In assessing research expertise research quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, will also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education at the postgraduate level, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community. Experience of research in collaboration with commerce and industry as well as society will be particularly meritorious

Pedagogic proficiency will be assessed as carefully as scientific proficiency. Pedagogical skills should be well documented so that the quality can be assessed. Particular emphasis will be placed on experience of teaching quantitative methods. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality will be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration will be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise.

Assessment, other skills: Administrative and management skills are important for this position and will be afforded great weight.

Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality.

Management skills are demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise. 

Personal circumstances that may be of relevance in merit evaluation, for example parental leave, should be mentioned in the list of qualifications (CV).

When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.
