The Institute for Energy Efficiency (IEE) is actively seeking a Project Scientist in the full rank to commit effort on Professor Tim Sherwood's energy efficient computing projects. The Computer Architecture Lab at UC Santa Barbara, develops advanced computer systems exploiting novel technologies drawing upon expertise in algorithms, operating systems, compilers, circuits, networks, machine learning, programming languages, device physics, and security. This Project Scientist position is expected to bring many years of industrial expertise in developing and deploying applications at massive scales back into the academic environment and participate in a multitude of ongoing research projects on the general topic of energy efficient computing in the Institute for Energy Efficiency. Under the supervision of Professor Timothy Sherwood, new algorithms, software infrastructure, program instrumentation, and register-transfer level designs will be proposed and evaluated. A broad range of knowledge and competency in the area of energy efficient computer systems development is critical, and while work is supervised, a very high level of autonomy and independence is expected while performing work with the broader research team. Qualified individuals will be ready to make significant, creative, and lasting contributions to ongoing research projects in energy efficient computing.

Minimum Requirements:

Must have Ph.D. in Computer Science or Computer Engineering with a specialization in Computer System Design, Computer Architecture, Compilers, or closely related areas.

Additional Requirements:

Must have expert knowledge of computer systems programming as evidenced by doctoral work on a related topic, publication-level contributions to high-performance software, and 10+ years of industrial experience. Computer systems programming should include hardware-aware systems optimization and mapping complex application behaviors efficiently down to the underlying machine organization.

Must have 5+ years expertise in the design and evaluation of systems optimizing and balancing tradeoffs between performance and energy.

Must have 5+ years experience deploying real infrastructure-level software across data centers spanning multiple continents and used by 1000s of end users simultaneously.

Preferred Experience:

Experience as a contributing author on high-impact publications is highly desired. Specific experience, 4 or more papers, working with large teams and publishing in ISCA, ASPLOS, OSDI, and other highly selective conferences in the academic areas of Computer Architecture, Programming Languages, and Operating Systems.

More than 2 years of experience with software development on non-traditional architectures (e.g. TPUs, GPUs, or other domain specific accelerator architectures) is highly desired.

Experience developing software in teams and employing development practices to ensure timely, documented, and well tested software serving many 1000s of simultaneous users is desired

Experience mentoring more junior engineers in software development practices, system software architecture, and navigating mixed production/research environments desired.
