Research Assistant / Associate in Systems and Control
University of Cambridge Department of Engineering
United Kingdom

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the ERC project "Switchlets: a theory of multi-resolution behaviours for systems and control across scales" awarded to Professor Rodolphe Sepulchre. The project aims at laying the mathematical foundations of a multi-resolution behavioural theory.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Multi-resolution behaviours are behaviours that can be modeled,analyzed, controlled, and designed at different resolutions. The project is primarily inspired, steered, and benchmarked by the specific application of understanding the robustness and modulation principles of neuronal behaviours, in collaboration with experimental neuroscientists.

The successful candidate will design and develop appropriate methodologies to address the above research objective with a focus on systems and control across scales. This will involve planning and managing their own research activity and liaising with colleagues in the Control research group at Cambridge and with external partners. Results of the work will be presented at sponsor workshops, and will be written up as reports, conference papers or journal articles, as appropriate.

Applicants must have a very good first degree in engineering, applied mathematics or a closely related field and a PhD (or be close to obtaining one) in an area related to systems and control. Candidates should have:

  • an interest in one or several areas of biological modeling, eg systems biology, synthetic biology, computational neuroscience, experimental neurophysiology;
  • a broad knowledge of systems and control areas;
  • experience in spatio-temporal nonlinear modeling and control;
  • good oral and written communication skills;
  • experience both of working in a team and managing their own workload.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,715 - £30,942; Research Associate: £32,816 - £40,322

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2021 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
