Research Assistant, Event Processing for the Internet of Multimedia Things, Data Science Institute


Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a Research Assistant with the Data Science Institute (DSI) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is available from 01 October 2019 to contract end date of 31 March 2021.


Job Description:

The successful candidate will work as part of a team researching Event Processing for the Internet of Multimedia Things at the Data Science Institute of NUI Galway. In this role, they will develop novel approaches to event processing using AI approaches with knowledge graphs as well as building prototypes that encapsulate and demonstrate the research.



  • Contribute to the design and implementation of innovative research concepts and application to meet the needs of industry & other collaborators.

  • Participate in Software development of demos & prototypes in Python or Java & other technologies

  • Actively participate as a member of the research team and assist with overall objectives of the team

  • Present information on research project progress and outcomes to other stakeholders.

  • Assist in analysis and interpretation of results of research.

  • Working under the direction of project leader/PI, plan and manage own day-to-day research activity.

  • Provide guidance as required to any other staff and/or research students assisting with the research project, as agreed with the Principal Investigator/Grant holder.

  • Assist in developing internal and external contacts with researchers in related areas.

  • Contribute to work of Institute through activities such as student Open Days, Outreach activities & other promotion activity within the Institute/University as appropriate.


Qualifications/Skills required:


Essential Requirements:

  • University degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related field.

  • Strong skills in software development (Python or Java)

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and scientific writing skills.

  • Excellent written and oral proficiency in English

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proven ability to prioritise workload and work to strict deadlines.

  • Ability to work in a team and to take responsibility to contribute to the overall success of the team.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities


Desirable Requirements:

  • Industrial experience within a software development environment

  • Experience/Knowledge with machine learning and deep learning algorithms, especially with respect to computer vision applications.

  • Experience/Knowledge with graph-based data processing

  • Experience/Knowledge of distributed systems and event/stream processing technologies (i.e. Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Apache Kafka)

Salary: €22,110 to €34,612 per annum (pro-rata)


Start date: Position is available from 1 October 2019
