A Research Assistant/Associate position is available in the Department of Computer Science and Technology to work on the ESRC-funded project 'CybercrimeNLP (CC-NLP): A natural language processing toolkit for the interdisciplinary analysis of underground online forums'. We are looking to appoint a computer scientist to work in an interdisciplinary team.

The CC-NLP project is part of the Cambridge Cybercrime Centre. We are designing and developing a web application and NLP tools to enable interdisciplinary researchers to analyse our CrimeBB dataset. We are looking for a researcher to finalise work on the application, contribute to tool development, and analyse data for research outputs that utilise these tools.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have the following skills:

  • Project management.
  • Software engineering, including devops tasks to integrate the new application within the existing ecosystem, and to automate the data pipeline.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL.
  • Software development experience (knowledge of JavaScript, React, Nodejs, Elasticsearch is preferred), and a working knowledge of Linux.
  • Familiarity with NLP, and challenges associated with large scale data analysis.
  • Data science/data analysis expertise.

To be appointed at the Research Associate level candidates should hold a PhD or have significant relevant experience. Suitably experienced candidates with an MSc will be considered for appointment on the Research Assistant scale. Exceptionally, candidates with other relevant qualifications and experience may also be considered. The position includes membership of the USS career-average pension scheme, paid teaching opportunities, and the potential to undertake private consulting work.

Good knowledge of English and communication skills are important.

We expect to notify those shortlisted for interview in August and conduct interviews shortly thereafter. The expectation is that the successful candidate will start work as soon as possible.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Alice Hutchings (alice.hutchings@cl.cam.ac.uk).
