Research Associate/Fellow (Fixed-term) in Mathematical Sciences

We are looking for a researcher, whose expertise lies in modelling structure borne sound in complex structures, to work with Prof Gregor Tanner from the School of Mathematical Sciences and Dr Dimitrios Chronopoulos from the Faculty of Engineering on a Clean Sky project funded by the European Union entitled “SilentProp”. The central aim of the project is to develop computational and experimental noise assessment and suppression methodologies for the next generation of silent distributed propulsion configurations.

You will be able to carry out duties to the highest standard and to evidence how through your experience you will: 

  • Undertake original research of international excellence.
  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own and/or collaborative research area.
  • Prepare papers for publication in leading journals and/or contribute to the dissemination at national/international conferences, workshops and meetings resulting in successful research outputs.
  • Identify opportunities and assist in writing bids for research grant applications. Prepare proposals and applications to both external and/or internal bodies for funding, contractual or accreditation purposes.

 We are looking for a confident, organised researcher who can evidence:

  • A PhD (or close to completion) or an equivalent qualification in mathematics, physics or mechanical engineering.
  • Expert knowledge of numerical simulations in the context of noise and vibration.
  • Background knowledge in more than one of the following areas:Excellent communication and organisational skills.
    • Linear wave theories and high frequency asymptotics. 
    • Acoustics and linear elastic as well as the modelling of porous media.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, both internally and externally.

This full-time (36.25 hours per week) position is available from 1 September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 20 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.
