The Thales-Bristol Partnership in Hybrid Autonomous Systems Engineering (T-B PHASE) is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to focus on the topic of psychology and systems safety for autonomous systems that rely on human-machine teaming.

Candidates with experience of studying human machine interactions (HMI/HCI), human factors or human performance techniques are encouraged to apply. Experience in human performance monitoring – Electroencephalography (EEG), Physiological monitoring or psychological/psychometric questionnaires are also desirable.

The aim of this role is to research and develop design principles for autonomous systems that address the real world issues that are emerging in autonomous systems – where users of autonomous systems must closely inter-operate with people. The principles should help engineers in managing the complex challenge of designing autonomous systems that assure system safety while delivering the benefits of automation in the context of true 'human-machine' teaming. The successful candidate will be able to use case studies drawn from real deployed autonomous systems and use this information for the basis of further studies. The scope of this work could include:

Empirical research studies - supported by modellers and technologists, these studies could include more applied human science studies on human machine teaming which involve psychophysiological monitoring of users and adaption of the autonomous system to compensate for a users' physical/cognitive state;
Theoretical research - on issues around user adoption of autonomous systems, designing for trust in Artificial Intelligence (AI), ways of working with autonomous system and how best to develop Concept of Operations when working with autonomous systems, particularly in areas where users may not be able to appreciate or have the experiences to imagine what it will be like to work with an autonomous system.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to develop novel human factors and safety case techniques for application in challenging and impactful real-world domains. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that brings together industrial experts in systems design and engineering with academics from computer science, engineering mathematics and robotics.

We are explicitly seeking candidates with expertise that complements and extends rather than duplicates that of the current project team. Active engagement and collaboration with industrial stakeholders from Thales are essential in the delivery of this role.

Open-ended contract with funding for up to 2 years with the possibility of an extension. The anticipated start date is July 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
