The Opportunity

The School of Physics and Astronomy at Monash University is a top-ranked research school with a large and vibrant program in experimental and theoretical condensed matter physics and quantum gases. The School benefits from strong interactions with the Monash Centre for Atomically Thin Materials and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Future Low-Energy Electronics Technologies, led by ARC Laureate Professor Michael Fuhrer, the main supervisor for this position. The School’s state-of-the-art experimental laboratories are set within the $175M New Horizons Centre, and the School works closely with other major experimental platforms in the Monash precinct including the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy, the Melbourne Centre for Nanofabrication, and the Australian Synchrotron.

 

There currently exists a remarkable opportunity for a passionate Research Fellow to conduct research in experimental condensed matter physics and surface science, by examining the electronic properties of twisted 2D semiconductors. These atomically-thin semiconductor layers stacked with a twist allow for new degrees of control over the electronic properties of the resulting materials, with interesting implications for the fundamental physics of interacting electrons in nanostructures, as well as potential for groundbreaking applications.

 

The Research Fellow will fabricate van der Waals heterostructures of 2D semiconductors with controlled twist angle, and study their electronic properties using low-temperature magnetotransport, and will also work closely with the team (Prof. Fuhrer, Dr. Mark Edmonds, overseas theory and experiment collaborators, and an additional postdoctoral fellow to be appointed) to study the electronic structure of twisted 2D semiconductor heterostructures using scanning tunnelling microscopy and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The Research Fellow is expected to publish papers in high-impact journals, present results at major conferences and workshops, and to assist in the supervision of PhD and honours students.
