School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Job Description

The Swedish electricity grid is undergoing rapid transformation driven by the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), electrification of transport and buildings, and increasing operational uncertainty. To support efficient and reliable grid operations, distribution system operators (DSOs) require advanced digital tools that can capture the dynamic behavior of real networks, assess grid conditions in near real time, and evaluate the impact of new technologies.

This project aims to develop a high-fidelity digital twin of a distribution grid, combining physics-based modeling, data analytics, and simulation techniques. The digital twin will integrate real operational data from low-voltage and medium-voltage networks, enabling improved situational awareness, flexibility assessment, and planning support.

The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, in collaboration with E.ON.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree

  • Research expertise in modeling, identification, simulation, and optimization of distribution grids

  • Very good knowledge of English, both written and verbal, as required for daily work

  • Solid programming skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong expertise in at least one of the following areas:

    • Power system digitalization or deep reinforcement learning

    • Power system optimization and energy management
