The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

About the department

At the Department of Applied Information Technology, critical and interdisciplinary research is conducted in an international environment of the highest quality with great relevance to the surrounding society. Our researchers are in the midst of the debate to help explain and problematize IT- and society-related challenges linked to the digitalization of society.

We develop the individual's knowledge and ability to analyze, understand and handle various aspects of IT as well as the interaction between human and technology in areas such as human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, blockchain, digital innovation, e-Health, mobile communication, robots, social media and IT in schools and teaching.

We provide education at Bachelor's and Master's level anchored in research and the development of society.
The department is located at the knowledge-intensive Lindholmen, and has a well-developed collaboration with both business and public sector as well as the civil society.

About the division of human computer interaction

The Division of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) started in the summer of 2019 and is currently in an expanding phase with the focus to become an important actor within research, education and public outreach at the University of Gothenburg. We have a close collaboration with the Division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and aim to strengthen the research within these fields at the University of Gothenburg.

The purpose of the division is to contribute to a sustainable and enjoyable way of living with technology. In a world where IT is constantly present, it is important to understand this presence and how it affects us. The research is primarily focused on applications for health and wellbeing, and we carry out various types of design research and analytical studies of empirical conditions. We do this work by designing, constructing and studying technology in use. In order to carry out the research, we sometimes need to develop new tools in order to get close to and capture the everyday situation. This is a way of studying existing practices, what use looks like today. To study alternative ways in which technology can be present in everyday life, we sometimes also need to design and implement these alternatives to be able to test them.

With regards to education we work with courses in interaction design, human-computer interaction, programming and artificial intelligence. We are currently working on developing new courses within programming for students of cognitive science and informatics at the department, and therefore need to strengthen our competence. In connection to collaboration and outreach, the division recently started the Appademy, (https://hci-gu.github.io/appademin/), a service targeting other researchers at University of Gothenburg who need help with including digital tools in their research. This initiative has lead to several collaborative projects with researchers from other disciplines and we are counting on a strong expansion within this area in the coming years. Therefore, we are hiring a senior lecturer in interaction design, with a focus on HCI and programming within the areas of health and well-being.
