Position:  The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking candidates for a teaching assistant professor position with a focus on Computer Science Education.  This is a full-time, academic year (9 month paid over 12 months) non-tenure track position.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, which over the past decade has been consistently ranked in the top ten in the nation by US News and World Report, is initiating an endorsement and licensure program for teaching computer science in middle and high schools. We seek an individual who will further this tradition of excellence in their teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will teach courses, contribute to program development and conduct research related to computer science education. The successful candidate will also participate in the recruitment and training of graduate students. More information about the department is available at http://education.illinois.edu/ci/.


Qualifications: An earned doctorate in computer science education, the learning sciences, computer science, teaching and learning or a related field. The successful candidate will have evidence of teaching at the undergraduate or graduate levels, or conducting professional development activities related to computer science education; ideally the candidate will have experience in a pre-service teacher education program. Prior teaching experience is required, along with expertise in learning, teaching and/or assessment of computer science. Evidence of a scholarly record commensurate with a teaching track position, ideally associated with the field of computer science education is required.


Preferred: Prior K-12 teaching experience. Ability to contribute to one of the ongoing undergraduate teaching initiatives (e.g., DELTA, teacher education licensure programs).Evidence of prior successful interdisciplinary collaboration. Experience developing curriculum for pre-service and in-service teachers, particularly related to middle and high school computer science. Evidence of teaching abilities in pre-service teaching programs. Evidence of research related to the field of computer science education.


Responsibilities Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses related to computer science education (including online/hybrid courses). Summer teaching opportunities are available. Contribute to program development for the computer science endorsement and licensure programs and collaborate with departments across campus. Develop and teach other undergraduate and graduate level courses within the department as related to the candidate’s expertise. Carry out an active research program, and advise graduate students. Provide university, state, and professional service.


Starting Date and Salary:  The proposed starting date is August 16, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.  Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with rank and experience.
