W3-Professorship for Statistical Learning and Data Science (Chair)

Facility: Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics
(Institute of Statistics)

Instrumentation Date: the earliest possible date

End of the application deadline: 08/29/2019

The Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is one of the most renowned and largest universities in Germany.

As digitization progresses, there is a growing need to use, analyze, and extract the information that is available. This is the core task of statistics, which is also referred to as data science in the combination of statistics and computer science today. An important tool is statistical modeling and statistical learning. This focus should be represented by the professorship in teaching and research.

We are looking for a personality to research and teach in statistics, statistical learning and data science. The research focus should be on predictive modeling. This includes computer-driven procedures such as decision and regression trees, random forests, gradient boosting, as well as meta-level approaches, especially model selection, pipeline configuration, Bayesian optimization, and interpretable machine learning. The professorship should cover the area as far as possible across its entire width. The job holder (m / w / d) should be broadly methodical in the mentioned area and be able to represent the practical implementation of the mentioned approaches in software. The professorship should act as a "methodical bridgehead" in computer science.

Expected is a proven extensive third party funding. It should also be shown that research results can be transferred interdisciplinary to other scientific areas. Active participation in the elite study program Data Science is expected, as well as experiences with modern teaching concepts such as inverted classrooms and e-learning.

The Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich (LMU) would like to gain a well-qualified personality who has demonstrated her academic qualification following her university studies, as well as an above-average doctorate or comparable aptitude through internationally visible, excellent achievements in research and teaching.

In case of employment as a civil servant, the age of 52 may not be completed at the time of appointment. In urgent cases, exceptions may be allowed.

The LMU aims to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore urges women scientists to apply.

Handicapped persons are preferred with otherwise substantially equal suitability.

The LMU offers support for dual career couples.
