Tenure Track Associate Professor Position in Design and Optimization of Heterogeneous Wireless Access Networks


The University of Oulu announces a tenure-track opening for highly qualified researchers in the field of wireless communications engineering, more precisely design and optimization of heterogeneous wireless access networks.


The position is open at the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) – Radio Technologies Research Unit (http://www.oulu.fi/cwc), one of the leading research centers in the field of wireless communications technology and system design. Research at CWC focuses on signal processing and radio engineering, radio access and network technologies as well as future wireless internet. The main application areas include 5G and beyond, IoT, secure virtualized networks, disaster prevention and recovery ICT, medical ICT, smart energy grids and mobile clouds. CWC employs a staff of 150 including 10 professors. Its collaborative network includes several major companies and research universities. CWC plays a major role in the recently established Nokia Bell Labs and University of Oulu Joint Center for Future Connectivity. CWC’s high volume of competitive external funding from the Academy of Finland (equivalent to National Science Foundation), the European Commission (H2020) and Tekes (the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation) shows the strength of its research.  CWC has a top-notch research infrastructure with radio frequency equipment and a 5G Test Network (http://5gtn.fi/).


The tenure-track position in design and optimization of heterogeneous wireless access networks is directed to investigate and design future radio access networks and their physical, link and medium access control layer technologies and related signal processing and optimization methodologies with applications in the evolving 5G systems and beyond. The tenure track position is open to highly talented researchers who hold a doctoral degree and have an excellent potential for an outstanding scientific career, and master one or more of the above mentioned research topics.  


The successful applicant of this call will be placed at the level of Associate Professor of the four-level tenure track system. The position of an Associate Professor is initially a fixed-term position for five years, but a continuation period may be granted or the position may be made permanent. Career advancement on the tenure track is based on performance assessments that measure the candidate’s merits as indicated in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines: http://www.oulu.fi/university/node/38379. Researcher appointed to a tenure track position may advance in his/her career through the tenure track process and be appointed to a permanent position as a professor or a distinguished professor.


Job Responsibilities and Required Qualifications:   

A person at any level of the academic tenure track system is expected to conduct world-class scientific research, to acquire external funding, to publish in leading journals and conferences, to supervise doctoral students, to be an active member of the international scientific community, to create and teach related B.Sc., M.Sc. and D.Sc. level courses, and to exhibit academic leadership.


Evaluation criteria:   

The applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • publications: dissemination, quality of the publication fora, citations

  • active role in researcher training

  • acquired external funding

  • experience in different research environments

  • activity in the international scientific community

  • acknowledgements and awards



Depending on personal achievement and performance, the salary of the appointed Tenure Track researcher will be set at levels 6-7 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities (€ 4100  - € 5400 gross/ month).
