At the Department of Department of Information and Media Studies, there is a vacancy for a period of 4 years as a fellow researcher for research before data journalism. 25% of collecting time is a duty to be performed at the department. The positions have been added to the institute's initiative in Media City Bergen.


In 2017, BT, BA, NRK, TV2, Vizrt, and parts of the Department of Information and Media Studies at UiB gathered in Media City Bergen. In collaboration with media technology companies and content producers, the Institute is building an internationally attractive research and education environment before media technology and content production. The institute has started six new and professional-oriented study programs with high professional relevance at the bachelor and master's level before journalism, television production, media and interaction design. Educationstilboda will provide important expertise for one industry with major conversion needs. The Institute has established a master's thesis in investigative journalism, and is working on plans to establish a Center for Investigative Journalism in 2018.


When the community's infrastructure hosts digitized, our data and knowledge bases end up in databases and information systems. To secure critical auctions into these systems, we need journalists who can not use them, but also have the skills to develop new databases and to analyze such systems. One of the main drivers for data journalism has our large amounts of data, which means that manual review is no longer realistic. Computer technology has thus become a naughty element in journalism, and technological expertise is central to the journalistic handsaming of cellular materials.


Arbeidsoppgåver / research area

To this position, we seek one candidate who can strengthen the institute to say research in the field of data journalism, understood as the development and use of information technologies in the acquisition, processing and dissemination of large amounts of data for journalistic purposes, as well as analyzes of such systems in a journalistic context. Current research areas include human-machine interaction (HCI), statistical analysis, crowdsourcing, data mining, data visualization, media design, algorithmic accountability, information retrieval (native artificial intelligence) and natural language processing (NLP). 


Fellowship positions are a contribution to strengthening research activity before journalism and technology at the department's department in Media City Bergen. The host should also contribute to the development of professional dialogue and collaboration between the research and education community and the media industry, for example by organizing seminars and workshops. The host must participate in the teaching at the institute.


Qualifications and Qualities

  • Applicants must have obtained a master's degree in information science, media literacy, journalism or equivalent competence, or have submitted a master's degree report for evaluation before the expiration of the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the master's degree is achieved before the appointment can take place.

  • Experience with research on media and communication technology will be an advantage.

  • Programming skills will be added to weight (to judges: java, python, r, php, c, ES6 or equivalent).

  • Have the ability to work independently and structured, as well as be able to work in interdisciplinary teams.

  • Fluent in English verbal and written.

About fellow positions:

The collective fellowship period is 4 years, where 25% of the time is duties, linked to research, teaching and dissemination. If you have been added earlier in the recruitment position, you may be kidding during the vesting period.


About the postgraduate studies:

As a fellow student you will participate in the research education at UiB. The education has a standard timeframe of 3 years, and leads to a PhD degree. For admission, you must have completed the master's degree. The extent of the educational background must be at least equivalent to five-year, Norwegian master's degree, including one two-year master's degree comprising a master's degree. The master's degree must be within the subject area for which admission is sought.

  • Salary after salary step 50 (Lpl.17.515, code 1017, LR20.8) upon appointment. This amounts to a yearly salary of NOK. 435 500, - gross. Further promotion occurs after tenance seniority in the position

The project:

One plan for the research work in the form of a project sketch of 3-5 pages will follow the application. Project sketches shall contain a progress plan for the various parts of the research work and one publishing plan. It will deal with problems and material, as well as the choice of theory and method. It was assumed that it is realistic to carry out the project during the deployment period. A budget for operating expenses must be settled. In addition, project description will be the basis for admission to postgraduate studies.
