Job Purpose
To pursue a world-class research programme in Computing Science within the topics of the Glasgow Interactive Systems (GIST) Section; to teach related topics in Computing Science at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels; to carry out allocated administrative tasks.


The research topics covered by GIST include:


human-computer interaction;
social robotics;
ubiquitous computing.
The School seeks applications from outstanding candidates to develop and lead research of international standard in these or related topics.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Develop internationally leading research activity in Computing Science.

2. Develop a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and secure the funding required to underpin the long-term growth of the research activity.

3. Develop a high level output of research publications in leading international conferences and journals, and deliver presentations at national and international conferences, enhancing the reputation of the School, the College and the University.

4. Recruit and supervise research students and research staff and ensure their effective development.

5. Contribute to the wider aspects of research, such as the review of publications and proposals.

6. Develop research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University of Glasgow, including multi-disciplinary links, and develop external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.

7. Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching activities within the School of Computing Science.

8. Contribute to the on-going development and design of undergraduate and/or postgraduate curricula, in a manner that supports a research-led approach to student learning.

9. Participate fully in assessment and examination processes using a variety of methods, as appropriate, and provide feedback to students that is relevant, timely and supports their learning.

10. Engage in professional development activities as appropriate and in external academic and professional activities to enhance the reputations of the School, the College and the University.

11. Contribute to the administrative duties of the School, as allocated by the Head of School.


For appointment at Grade 8 you will:


12. Sustain internationally leading research activity in a priority area in Computing Science, including a track record of publications of international quality and funding required for this research and make a greater leadership contribution to the School's research activities.

13. Take responsibility for the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities in the relevant and related subject areas, in accordance with the School programme.

14. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Glasgow 2020 – A Global Vision

A1 An Honours degree (SCQF Level 10) in Computing Science or a related discipline.
A2 A PhD (SCQF Level 12) or equivalent in one of the GIST research areas.
A3 A developing reputation in an internationally competitive field of Computing Science research that reflects the School’s strategic priorities and complements existing research themes within GIST.


B1 Possess Associate Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy.

Job Features

Typical Performance Standard:
Design and lecture on equivalent of 2 courses in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes; carry normal project supervision load.
One or more REF-quality papers per annum
Apply for external research funding on average twice per year
Supervise at least two research students


Lead development of research capability in Computing Science.
In collaboration with colleagues, develop research plans and submit grant proposals.
Manage research grants as principal investigator or co-investigator as appropriate.
Individual or co-supervision of research students.
Regular publication of papers in leading international conferences and journals
Undertake teaching in accordance with a fair distribution of School workload
Managerial and administrative tasks as assigned by the Head of School.


Planning and Organising
Long term strategic development of research plans and research capabilities.
Monthly/annually – grant writing and submission.
Weekly/monthly – experimental research undertaken by self or research students/staff.
Weekly/monthly/annually – planning and preparation of taught courses.
Plan and organise administrative duties on an ongoing basis.
Reactive – daily queries from students/staff.

Standard Terms & Conditions
Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 7/8/9, £34,520 - £38,833 / £42,418 - £49,149 / £50,618 - £56,950 per annum.


New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.
