Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department carries out research within data, electricity and electronics, and offers bachelor programs in electrical- and computer engineering, master programs in computer science and cybernetics/signal processing, and a PhD program in information technology. The master program in computer science is an international program and is taught in english. There are currently 40 employees, including research fellows and postdocs, and 520 students at the departement.


Associate Professor of Computer Science


The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as Associate Professor of Computer Science.


Duties and academic community

The subject area for the position is the general field of Computer Science.


The position is organizationally affiliated to the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.


As an Associate Professor, you will primarily teach and guide students at bachelor’s, Master's and PhD level related to the general field of computer science, conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research fields in the department, and contribute to the development of partnerships with businesses. The development and use of varied and digital learning methods in teaching, innovation and value creation based on results from research, academic and development work will be included in the position. Qualification requirements


We are seeking an associate professor with a PhD in Computer Science with specialization in fault tolerant distributed systems.


You must be able to document solid theoretical knowledge of the specialization listed above, and must have documented experience with using methodologies from both the theory of distributed computing, prototyping and experimental evaluation. You will participate in collaborative research with existing research groups at the department, and hence your ability to initiate and contribute to collaborative research of high scientific quality will be emphasized. Research collaboration with academic institutions or industry nationally and internationally, as well as qualifications in innovation and commercialization will be viewed positively. Young age and good publication track record can compensate for a lower total number of publications, and lack of experience in research collaboration and commercialization.


It is very important to have the ability and willingness to participate academically and socially among colleagues within the computer science research group and the department at large. In the assessment of candidates, strong emphasis is placed on personal characteristics.


You must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, or complete a university pedagogical course within a period of two years following your appointment. The course will be given by the university.

  • A reflective and conscientious attitude to your own work relating to teaching and guidance.
  • The ability to involve and engage students in teaching where the course's objectives, content and assessment situations are closely interlinked.
  • Experience of and/or interest in the development of varied learning methods and digital tools in teaching.
  • Research results published in recognized Norwegian and international publications, and references indicating progression in research and publication.
  • The ability to initiate, obtain external funding for, drive forward and carry out research and development projects.
  • Experience of partnerships with businesses.
  • The ability to build and nurture networks – regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Experience of innovation and the commercialization of research.
  • The ability to manage a heavy workload, inquisitive and motivated to develop new knowledge in collaboration with others.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills, and the ability to contribute to a constructive working environment.


The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. If you do not have a good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, you must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 within a period of two years from the start of your appointment. If required, you will be offered a Norwegian course paid for by the university. Applicants who can teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at accession will be preferred.

General information


Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works/documented artistic activity and documented teaching and educational expertise. The experts will also assess your experience of popularization/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.


If a large number of applications is received, it may be necessary to reject some applications before the associated documents are sent to the expert committee for assessment. This will apply to applicants who do not satisfy key qualification requirements.


Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be called to interview and to complete a teaching evaluation before any recommendations are made.

Relevant duties

Together with other scientific personnel, associate professors are required to:



  • Contribute to the development of academically strong and relevant education programs.
  • Further development and strengthening of the education programs’ academic reputation by providing high-quality teaching and support at bachelor's, Master’s and PhD level.
  • Contribute to and develop relevant further education and continuing education courses.
  • Facilitate the students’ learning in line with the learning objectives of the study programs.
  • Drive forward pedagogical development work and the production of educational aids.
  • Participate in continuous training processes linked to teaching and support.
  • Contribute to the development of new teaching methods and the use of different digital learning resources.
  • Carry out student evaluations and drive forward the continuous development of course quality.

The successful applicant will be expected to support and participate in the other activities of the faculty and be able perform tasks across departmental and faculty interfaces.


An annual plan for the work that is to be carried out will be established following discussion between the head of the department and associate professor in accordance with the university's guidelines for the planning of work.



UiS expects all scientific staff to undergo continuous training in relation to their own teaching and research.


During their first year, associate professors must participate in the university's college-based guidance program, NyTi.


Associate professors who are unable to document sufficient pedagogic and didactic expertise linked to higher education must complete a university pedagogical course within two years from their appointment.


Associate professors who do not have a command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 (in accordance with the common European framework for language) within a period of two years from the beginning of their appointment.


Associate professors can apply for paid sabbaticals in accordance with the university's Guidelines for the granting of sabbaticals.


Associate professors can apply for promotion to full professor status in accordance with Section 2-2 of the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.
