Doctoral candidate in the field of Wireless Access Solutions for Internet of Things

 

Wireless signal processing group at Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering, Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics is looking for highly motivated and talented doctoral candidate to join its research work.



JOB DESCRIPTION


Internet of Things (IoT) networks connecting billions of physical devices wirelessly through will require different analysis and design techniques and performance indicators than traditional cellular networks. Some pertinent research challenges are

  1. Massive IoT deployments and machine-type communications generate dynamically changing load and traffic patterns posing challenges to coverage and service of quality guarantees.  This calls for novel network planning and radio resource management techniques that are able to cope with such demands.

  2. Traditional cellular systems rely on sophisticated control signaling, but given the massive amount of connections in IoT the overhead of such signaling would dominate the information payload. Therefore, access solutions that dramatically reduce the control overhead are required.

  3. IoT systems are inherently heterogeneous consisting of heterogeneous transceivers, radio links, and networks. In many areas, long-range communication using wired backhaul, or even terrestrial wireless backhaul, is not possible, Complementing the terrestrial access with cost-effective small and nano-satellite based backhaul and the design of such backhaul access network may become topical. In the other end, short-range wireless communication may use access techniques using frequency bands from VHF up to visible light.

  4. Due to cost and power constraints, IoT transceivers and network protocols must be simple enough in terms of hardware and software. A low-cost hardware means RF imperfections that may lead to a considerable performance degradation.  Furthermore, to achieve a long operating time IoT devices spend most of the time in sleeping mode, and when waking up, their parameters like timing, and carrier frequency, may be seriously offset causing large multiuser interference in the system. Characterization, analysis, and mitigation of these effecs is an issue.

  5. Communication security is obviously important given the information-gathering ability of IoT systems. Again, complexity and energy efficiency of the security methods for IoT networks play an important role.

 

The objective is to investigate, much beyond the state of the art and with fresh points of view, some of these IoT-related concepts. The exact definition of the problem and the scope depends on the background, skill set, and research interests of the prospective doctoral candidate

  
RESEARCH GROUP


Professor Risto Wichman leads the Wireless Signal Processing group. The group has been concentrating on research on physical layer of wireless communication systems. The topics include

  • full-duplex technology, performance analysis, algorithm design, implementation

  • multiantenna communications, especially closed-loop, massive MIMO, reduced complexity and implementation

  • spectrum sharing, TV white spaces, licensed shared access, CBRS, radio environment mapping and radio resource management

  • analysis and mitigation of co-channel interference in wireless networks

  • design and analysis of network topologies in wireless heterogeneous networks

  • analysis, identification, and compensation of imperfections due to RF components using digital signal processing

 

The applied techniques are drawn from communication theory, digital signal processing, and information theory. Spectrum sharing work has sparked the spin-off company Fairspectrum, www.fairspectrum.com.

 
REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree or equivalent in communications engineering, signal processing, control engineering, or applied mathematics

  • Excellent math and analytical skills and/or excellent algorithm development and programming skills to conduct large scale simulations.

 

SALARY AND CONTRACT TERMS


Doctoral Candidate position will be filled initially for one year with possible extensions (expected maximum duration of doctoral studies is 4 years). The starting salary is approximately 2400 €/month for a doctoral candidate and it will increase with performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits and holiday bonus. Finland has a comprehensive social security system. We prefer that the studies start no later than September 1st, 2018.
