Research Assistant/Associate (Fixed Term)


The Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication is looking for a Research Assistant / Research Associate to lead the Centre's projects focusing on communication in healthcare.


Two projects are already running which the post-holder will be involved in: one is the design and evaluation (through RCT) of online risk communication tools developed by the Centre for use as part of shared decision-making within healthcare; and the other is the design and evaluation of a new format of genetic/genomic report, designed to clearly communicate to a lay and non-specialist audience the results and implications of genetic or genomic testing.


The ideal person for this role will have an interest in how people evaluate risk, uncertainty, and evidence, and how best to communicate this information to diverse audiences within a medical context. Skills required include: designing and implementing experimental studies with a variety of different kinds of participant; user-centred design and qualitative research; and analyzing complex data. The post-holder will work on a range of projects developed in collaboration with a wide array of external partners, and will contribute to setting research directions and priorities. The post-holder would be expected to present their work at conferences, write it up for academic journals and the popular press, and demonstrate the tools to potential users across the country to ensure maximum uptake.


Candidates should have a Masters, PhD, or equivalent-level experience in Psychology, behavioural science, or a clinical discipline, and have demonstrable experience of conducting, analyzing, and interpreting studies involving human behaviour (independently preparing experimental tasks, recruiting for and running experiments, using a range of statistical techniques for data analysis). Candidates should have a real and demonstrable enthusiasm for doing work which will have a practical impact and have experience of presenting their work to different audiences. Appointment to the grade of Research Assistant or Research Associate will be dependant on skills and experience.


Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for up to 2 years in the first instance.
