The Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen (DIKU) is seeking candidates for a professorship in Information Retrieval. The new professor is expected to make a significant contribution to leadership in the Information Retrieval discipline within the Department of Computer Science. The professor must ensure that information retrieval research, teaching, and outreach activities are thriving, and act as a mentor to young researchers. The professor will be expected to secure competitive external funding and build an internationally recognized research group. 

 

Outstanding applicants in all areas of information retrieval will be considered. Sub-disciplines of special interest within the field of information retrieval include: 

  • Theoretical models and foundations of information retrieval and access 

  • Efficiency and scalability 

  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning 

  • Natural Language Processing 

  • Information privacy and security 

  • Domain-Specific Applications, such as legal, enterprise, and health 

We are looking for an experienced researcher with an innovative mindset and intellectual curiosity to strengthen and complement the research profile of the department's Machine Learning Section (ML). The section's activities range from research into the theoretical foundations of machine learning to applications within a broad set of domains, including natural language processing, information retrieval, medical image analysis and modelling of biological data. The department has 6 research sections: Algorithms and complexity; Human-centred computing; Image analysis, computation modelling, and geometry; Machine learning; Programming languages and theory of computing; Software, data, people and society. The department values interdisciplinary research and teaching and is actively involved in several cross-faculty research projects and educational programmes. The successful candidate must be capable of and interested in facilitating cross-disciplinary interactions both within the Computer Science Department and across the University, and the candidate is expected to engage in interdisciplinary teaching, including courses for students with a non-technical background, e.g., the humanities or health sciences.  

 

Selection Criteria 

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent in Information Retrieval or other relevant fields. 

  • A demonstrated a relevant world-class track record of high-quality research and scholarship as evidenced by publications in journals and conferences at the highest international level. Outstanding applicants in all areas of information retrieval will be considered. Experience in interdisciplinary research will be an advantage. 

  • A track record of leadership, including leadership of a research group, effective management of academic staff, organization of workshops and conferences and involvement in outreach activities. 

  • A track record in attracting research funding from competitive grant agencies and other sources including industry. 

  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong links with industry, government, and other external partners. 

  • Drive, energy and a vision for building and leading a world-class research group in Information Retrieval. 

  • Demonstrated capacity to teach effectively across a range of subjects, including the capacity to supervise undergraduate and graduate students; and develop curriculum and learning resources. Experience in interdisciplinary teaching will be an advantage. Applicants are required to have university-level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. 

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other researchers, students, and technical-administrative staff. 

  • Relevant industry experience will be an advantage.  

Key responsibilities 

Research 

  • Build and sustain strong research activities in Information Retrieval, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration where appropriate. 

  • Obtain significant research funding from sources outside the University. 

  • Publish in top-tiered refereed journals, books or monographs and refereed conference proceedings. 

  • Supervise Ph.D., students. 

Teaching 

  • Coordinate and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses as required by the Head of Department. 

  • Develop courses, programmes and learning resources in collaboration with other teachers and students.  

  • Supervise master’s students. 

Leadership and service 

  • Provide international leadership in the discipline area of Information Retrieval. 

  • Encourage and assist Ph.D. students and young researchers to publish in top-tiered refereed journals, books, and refereed conference proceedings. 

  • Foster excellence in research and teaching. 

  • Undertake professional activities including membership of assessment and other committees, membership of editorial boards, the organization of workshops and conferences. 

Outreach 

  • Develop collaborative relationships with industry and government. 

  • Engage in the dissemination of research results to industry and government and to the wider public.

Terms of employment 

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  

 

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  

 

Commencing salary is currently DKK 615.415 including annual supplement (+ pension DKK 105.235). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
