PhD Position in Storage, Indexing and Retrieval of Multimodal Representations KU Leuven Informatics Section Belgium


The LIIR lab of the Human-Computer Interaction research group of the Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven has an open PhD position in the frame of the ERC Advanced Grant CALCULUS.



We offer a fully funded four-year PhD position financed by the ERC (European Research Council) Advanced Grant CALCULUS “Commonsense and Anticipation enriched Learning of Continuous representations sUpporting Language UnderStanding” ( The position focuses on storing and fast retrieval of content representations that are often continuous in nature. Currently, there is a large interest in representing words, sentences, documents, and other modalities such as images or multimodal content with continuous representations in the form of vectors or tensors. There is a need for storing these in efficient ways allowing their fast retrieval. Effective models could be inspired by how the human brain stores and retrieves information. He or she will be given the opportunity for personal development beyond research, for example by contributing to teaching (e.g., at the undergraduate and graduate levels).



  •  You have (or are near completion of) a Master in Computer Science (or a related field) and have obtained excellent study results.
  •  You have a motivated interest in fundamental research in storage, indexing and search of content representations.
  •  You are good at collaborating in a team.
  •  You work proactively and independently and have good communication skills.
  •  You have a very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.
  •  You are highly motivated, ambitious and result-oriented.
