The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. Within this interdisciplinary and international setting the faculty employs more than 1100 employees, including about 400 graduate students and about 2100 students. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics.

 

The Department of Microelectronics has a strong interdisciplinary research and education programme in the areas of 1. health and well-being, 2. autonomous systems, 3. next generation wireless and sensing technology and 4. safety and security.

 

With 11 IEEE Fellows among the staff, an excellent microfabrication infrastructure, electrical and physical characterisation facilities, and a strong international academic and industrial network, the department provides high-level expertise in each of these areas throughout the entire system chain.

 

The Electronic Components, Technology and Materials (ECTM) group offers a multi-disciplinary research environment, with a strong interaction with industry, on emerging materials, innovative microstructures and devices and novel integration concepts for Health, Energy, Sensing & Environmental applications.

 

Job description

 

Autonomous driving will be a key capability for future vehicles. However, AD cars require fundamental changes in the vehicle technologies with respect to connectivity, computational power, and safety. The general objective of the HiPer project is to develop the concept of an automotive grade (Level 5) High Performance Vehicle Computer (HPVC) system in a passenger car. The project aims at innovations along 3 paths: (i) Advanced thermal management, (ii) High speed communication and (iii) Integration for robust and reliable systems.

 

As part of Hiper project, this PhD research project aims at developing new and reliable packaging with novel thermal solution for HPVC. This work is intrinsically interdisciplinary, and the candidate will be involved in collaboration with both industrial and academic partners from several EU countries, in new packging concept development and prototyping,  multi-physics simulations, design for reliability, etc. The work will be mainly conducted at the ECTM group (ectm.tudelft.nl/), including EKL cleanroom, and supported by experienced researchers and technicians.

 

Requirements

 

We are seeking highly motivated candidates who are interested in joining our multi-disciplinary research team to conduct this university-company collaboration project, aiming to develop new packaging technology for autonomous driving. The specific desired background is experience on a subject related to this project and a MSc degree on Electronics, Mechanics, Materials science or a related area. We are looking for canndidates with great passion on research, strong drive for scientific excellency, self propelling, and great communication skills. The scientific qualities of the candidate should be demonstrated by an excellent MSc grades and publications.
