Applications are invited for the above post to join the EPSRC funded Digital Manufacturing on a Shoestring project, a joint project between Universities of Cambridge and Nottingham.

The digitalisation of manufacturing is a key enabler in the UK Government drive to raise the level of industrial productivity to match and exceed leading competitors. One of the critical challenges is how to support the digital manufacturing transformation of SMEs in key UK industrial sectors including automotive, aerospace and food. The Shoestring project will therefore address a common concern that recent developments in digital manufacturing are unlikely to be accessible by SMEs owing to the associated capital cost of upgrading industrial computing and communication environments. The project proposes a radically different approach to the digital evolution of a manufacturing operation by focussing predominantly on low cost solutions to industrial automation and information challenges. It will seek to exploit appropriate commercially available technologies for mobile computing, sensing, AI and tackle the challenges associated with integrating these safely and securely into a small scale high-tech manufacturing environment.

The successful candidates will work on the research and development of low-cost automation solutions, with a focus on algorithm and architecture development, data capture and processing methods, machine learning and hybrid machine control. In addition, the researcher will be expected to engage with both SMEs and large industrial partners on a regular basis in developing and implementing specific research applications.

This post is offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 2 years. Hours of work are full-time, however job share arrangements may be considered.
