Position Description:

The School of Computer Science at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenured
or tenure-track faculty position in Artificial Intelligence at the Assistant or Associate Professor
level. The earliest possible start date is July 1, 2019.

School of Computer Science

The School of Computer Science is currently comprised of 27 faculty, 9 staff, about 880
undergraduate and 50 MSc and PhD students. In September 2018, the School moved into the
newly renovated Reynolds Building.

The School offers two majors, Computer Science and Software Engineering, as well as a threeyear
General Program. The honours majors are available with a Co-operative Education option.
The MSc in Computer Science emphasizes both academic and applied research, and the PhD in
Computational Sciences produces interdisciplinary scholars who are capable of tackling
emerging problems in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, etc.

In December 2018, the University of Guelph launched the Centre for Advancing Responsible
and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (CARE-AI), with active participation of the faculty from the
School of Computer Science. As one of ten AI Master’s Programs recognized by the Vector
Institute for Artificial Intelligence, in February 2019, the Collaborative Specialization in Artificial
Intelligence (CSAI) was opened to Master’s students in Computer Science. A new Master of
Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence (MCTI) program at the School of Computer Science will
admit the first cohort in September 2019.

Qualifications

Education and Background

Candidates must hold a PhD in Computer Science or related field at the time of
appointment. Prior academic experience is an asset, such as post-doc, previous
academic appointment, research technician, etc. Relevant industrial experience will be
considered.

Scholarship

Candidates should have an outstanding research and publication record in the area of
artificial intelligence, with a strong preference for those working in the area of applied
AI. All fields of AI will be considered. The successful candidate has proposed an
independent and fundable research program in the Research Statement that is
interdisciplinary in nature to participate in the School’s Computational Sciences PhD
Program, and has demonstrated a capacity to conduct novel research that will expand
and complement our current research strengths. Candidate research programs that
foster economic growth and improve the lives of Canadians will be favourably
considered.

Teaching

Candidates should have strong undergraduate teaching interest and have demonstrated
ability to teach at the university level commensurate with candidate background. They
should have the ability to teach core computer science undergraduate courses and
graduate courses related to the research area. They must demonstrate supervision
experience (students, staff) on research-oriented projects.

Service

Candidates should provide evidence of community engagement, within academic
and/or other communities, such as conference organization, student club or student
council, participation in outreach, volunteering, etc., that is indicative of being able to
provide service to the School, University, and research community.

The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized research
program, and to secure external funding from tri-council agencies or equally prestigious funding
agencies. They are expected to support the current MSc and PhD programs with graduate
student supervision, and to be actively involved with CARE-AI and CSAI initiatives. They will
normally teach 3 courses per year, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful
candidate is expected to devote approximately equal time to research and to teaching, as well
as some time to provide service to the School, College, University, and research community at
large. The successful candidate will be encouraged to apply for Vector Institute Faculty
