University of Cambridge Department of Computer Science and Technology
United Kingdom

Senior Research Associate Salary Range, Grade 9, £41,526 - £52,559

The Department of Computer Science and Technology (also known as the Computer Laboratory) is an academic department within the University of Cambridge that encompasses Computer Science, along with many aspects of Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

With the recent generous donation to the Department from a major philanthropic donor for 'Advancing AI in Scientific Research', there is an exciting opportunity for researchers to develop their own independent research in Machine Learning or Data Science with application to science subjects over the course of a five year Research Fellowship.

The department will be building a cohort of DECAFs to continue its own growth in research in Machine Learning and Data Science, and to increase its uptake in other scientific disciplines across the University. Fellows will enhance their research leadership and teaching skills via project supervision and small group teaching.

The five-year appointment will allow fellows to apply for research funding as a Principal Investigator, supervise PhDs and collaborate with industry.

Essential requirements for the role include:

  • Degree level education, normally with a PhD in relevant specialist subject area.
  • Normally between two and four years' experience in Postdoctoral research.
  • A strong track record in one or more relevant research areas.
  • Evidence of high quality research outputs.
  • Evidence of potential for collaborations.
  • Evidence of potential to obtain additional research funding. Teaching experience and experience of research supervision is desirable.

This is a fixed term appointment and funds for the post are initially available for 5 years.

Please ensure that you upload the application documentation in pdf format as follows:

  • Curriculum Vitae including details of any teaching experience.
  • A full publications list (including information about the applicant's contribution to each paper).
  • A short proposal outlining what the applicant plans to do during the fellowship (up to 3 pages, with additional pages for references).
  • A teaching statement which should include the descriptions of at least two short Masters projects that the applicant would be interested in supervising. The projects should be feasible for students who have a reasonable amount of programming experience and should correspond to about three months full-time work.
  • Names of three referees: these should be contactable at any stage in the process.

If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application.
