Doctoral Grant (BOF), Artificial intelligence for bio-informatics

The Faculty of Sciences is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of Computer Sciences for a

Doctoral Grant by the University Research Fund (BOF) in the area of artificial intelligence for bio-informatics

The ADREM Data Lab is an internationally renowned research group known for its contributions to the theory as well as practical applications of data sciences. Within ADREM, prof. Kris Laukens leads a biodata mining research team (circa 20 people) that studies novel bio-informatics and artificial intelligence techniques to interpret complex molecular and biomedical data. The team performs both fundamental algorithmic research and applies these novel techniques to various real-life problems in a diverse array of life science domains (including immunology, oncology, etc.).

You will study AI approaches to unravel universal patterns that drive interactions between biomolecules, essential to understand living systems and diseases. By combining big protein sequence datasets with the power of advanced AI techniques you will study the fundamental building blocks of life. Taking cues from recent advances in natural language processing, you will develop deep neural network models to learn hidden patterns in molecular sequences. You will learn computational and AI skills, as well as their application in real-world biomedical settings.

Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of artificial intelligence for bio-informatics.

  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.

  • You contribute to teaching and research in data mining and bioinformatics in the Department of Computer Sciences, Faculty of Sciences.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in Computer Sciences (data sciences, artificial intelligence, ...), Bio-informatics or equivalent.

  • You can submit outstanding academic results.

  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

  • You have a good understanding of the theory and applications of modern data mining and artificial intelligence technology. Prior biological or bio-informatics background is not required (but useful), however you are enthusiastic to acquire the necessary life science background knowledge throughout your doctoral studies (with guidance from the team). You are a teamplayer who enjoys multi-disciplinary collaborations and you are eager to think outside the box. You have excellent (English) communication skills.

We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;
