Full Professor of Communications Engineering and Satellite Communications


at the Institute of Communication Networks and Satellite Communications of the Faculty of Electrical and Information Engineering starting from July 1, 2022. The position is tenured according to Section 98 of the Austrian University Act (§98 UG).


For this position, we are seeking a person with an outstanding scientific track record who is able to represent the area “Communications Engineering and Satellite Communications” in research and education.


The professorship should focus on research and teaching of theoretical foundations and their application in data transmission, embedded in mobile and stationary communication networks. The main focus shall be on multiple of the following topics:


  • Fundamentals and innovative methods of digital data transmission


  • Coding, modulation, adaptation and detection with consideration of wave propagation effects


  • Information-theoretical methods, models, and limits


  • Simultaneous and cooperative data transmission in communication networks


  • Applications of communications engineering where satellite communications is of particular interest, but vehicular systems, 5G/6G networks and other fields of application are also welcome.


The main tasks include teaching courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Electrical Engineering, Information and Computer Engineering, Digital Engineering, Electrical Engineering-Sound Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Space Sciences and Earth from Space: Fundamentals of Communications Engineering, Information Theory, Modelling of Transmission Channels and Communication Networks, as well as specialized lectures from the applicant’s own research areas.


The successful candidate is expected to take on a share of the overall teaching responsibilities of the faculty and engage in interdisciplinary collaborations. An active contribution to the academic governance of the university as well as intensive supervision of students are also expected.


The position will require the willingness to engage actively in intensive cooperation with other institutes and industrial partners in the greater Graz area as well as with international industry, other universities and research institutions.


Formal requirement for this position is a completed Austrian or equivalent international university education including a doctoral degree.


Main selection criteria are:


  • Outstanding scientific qualification in research and teaching (proven by relevant habilitation or equivalent achievements)
  • Industry experience and/or collaboration experience with industry, research institutions or universities
  • Excellent didactic skills and experience in university education
  • Qualification and aptitude for leadership
  • Involvement in the international research community
  • Experience with acquisition of research grants and management of funded projects
  • Ability to work in a team and cooperativeness
  • Gender and diversity competence


To ensure international representation of the research group and its work, excellent spoken and written competence in English is required. Fluency in German or the willingness to acquire it is also required.


Relocation to live in the greater Graz area is required.
