Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Software Engineering

Department of Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering, The University of Auckland

Applications are invited for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position in Software Engineering in the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering (ECSE). This academic position is roughly equivalent to Assistant or Associate Professor position, respectively, at major universities abroad.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand's pre-eminent research-led University. The ECSE Department is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Engineering, with over 30 full-time permanent academic staff. We currently have 750 undergraduates and more than 170 postgraduate students, with approximately 100 of these at the doctoral level. The ECSE Department offers Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering and Software Engineering (jointly with the Department of Computer Science). Each year approximately 100 students enter the Software Engineering undergraduate programme. Entry into this programme is very competitive, resulting in exceptionally capable cohorts of students.

The Department also offers taught masters programmes, research-only masters programmes, and doctoral programmes across its three disciplines. Our academic staff, postdoctoral fellows, PhD and masters students are researching a broad range of subjects, including: reconfigurable and parallel computing; model-driven programming; robotics; medical devices; human and social aspects of software engineering; agile software development; formal methods; software requirements engineering; signal, speech, and image processing; computer systems engineering; embedded systems, radio systems; digital communications; inductive power transfer; power electronics; power systems; and control systems. We have collaborative links with research groups and industry throughout New Zealand and around the world.

In this Lecturer/Senior Lecturer position you will be expected to undertake high quality research and teaching in the area of Software Engineering. You will have a PhD in a relevant area. Applications from candidates with research that also includes Computer Systems Engineering are particularly welcome. Being able to teach fundamental courses in more than one programme is also an advantage. You will also be expected to perform service roles for the Department.

You will be expected to conduct research, supervise postgraduate students, publish in high quality journals and attract external research income. Priority research areas include AI and machine learning, medical devices and systems, cyber security, cyber-physical and real-time systems, human and social aspects, robotics, and industrial automation. You will have the ability to create and deliver new postgraduate courses targeting local industry and international students. Candidates with cross-disciplinary focus and an ability to collaborate broadly will have an added advantage.

The level of appointment (Lecturer or Senior Lecturer) will depend on your previous record of research and teaching.
