The School of Maths and Physics operates with sixty full time academics, fifty research fellows, one hundred postgraduate students and twenty-five support staff. It comprises two teaching divisions and six research centres. There is a considerable crossover between these areas and the ethos of the School is one of excellence in research informing excellence in teaching.

 

The Mathematical Sciences Research Centre comprises 16 full time academic staff members and is currently in a phase of considerable expansion. It is internationally recognised for its research in Analysis and PDE’s, Operator Algebras, Optimisation, Statistics and Data Analytics, Topology and their applications, among others.

The Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT) is one of the University’s flagship Global Research Institutes (GRIs). 

 

The vision of ECIT is to become a globally recognised institute, driven by research excellence, solving societal challenges and delivering impact through a unique model of innovation.

 

ECIT has a strong international reputation in several areas of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The institute is made up of three research centres, namely the Centre for Data Science and Scalable Computing, the Centre for Secure Information Technologies and the Centre for Wireless Innovation.

 

We are looking to recruit a Lecturer/Reader in Foundations of Data Science. The successful applicant will undertake research in the Foundations of Data Science, in line with University’s research strategy, teach at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to contribute to the School administration/outreach activity.

 

You will be a member of the Mathematical Sciences Research Centre and will be eligible to become an Associate Member of the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology (ECIT), strengthening ECIT’s theoretical base in Data Science.

 

The successful candidate must have:

 

At Lecturer level:

 

•  Hold a PhD in Foundations of Data Science

•  Evidence of potential to deliver high quality teaching in Mathematics, Statistics and/or Data Science at undergraduate or postgraduate level through the medium of English

•  A strong record of publications, commensurate with career stage, in the Foundations of Data Science in peer reviewed/refereed journals that are REF returnable within the Mathematical Sciences Unit of Assessment

At Reader level:

•  PhD in the Foundations of Data Science

•  Evidence of sustained high quality lecturing in Mathematics, Statistics and/or Data Science at undergraduate or postgraduate level through the medium of English

•  Ability to provide strategic academic leadership in programme development and teaching

•  A distinguished record of research publications of international excellence, commensurate with past research career, in the Foundations of Data Science, REF returnable at international level

Salary Scale:   Lecturer £36,261 - £50,132 per annum (potential to progress to £53,175 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution)

 

Reader: £51,630 - £59,828 per annum (potential to progress to £65,361 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution)
