PhD Position in Cross-Reality Interaction
Catholic University of Leuven Department of Computer Science

This position is situated within the ARIA (Artificial Realities and Interactive Ambients) team based at the Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. The ARIA team focuses on research in the areas of Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality (XR) and in the broader domain of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

The project “Cross-Reality Interaction” seeks to develop novel interaction paradigms allowing users immersed in one “reality” of the XR spectrum to collaborate with users immersed in other realities, or not immersed at all. Currently, conventional VR solutions are typically designed to be contained within their specific reality and do not allow users to interact with users or elements present in other realities.

Three main challenges will constitute the main aims of this research on Cross-Reality Interaction:

  • How users in one reality can visualise or be made aware of what is happening in other realities.
  • How users can express interaction intents that originate in one reality but affect another.
  • How to evaluate the feeling of social presence across realities.

The successful candidates will also collaborate with international experts from the DFKI (Saarbruecken and Aalborg UniversityCopenhagen).

The ideal candidate will have a background in Computer Science or related disciplines, with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction. Excellent knowledge of programming and software architecture, plus experience with 3D development environments (e.g., Unity or Unreal Engine) is required. Candidates with additional experience with multi-user networking, 3D modelling, user study design and HCI research will be preferred. An excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is also necessary, to be ascertained with examples of the candidate’s written production and during the interview.

Two positions are available.

  • The first position is fully funded for four years, the duration of a PhD in Belgium.
  • The second position is funded for the first year of four. During this time, the candidate will be expected to submit an application to the FWO (Flemish Research Agency) by March 2021 to secure external funding. Regardless of the outcome, an extension can be possible depending on positive evaluation and availability of funding in 2021. In order to be eligible for this fellowship, the candidate must have graduated from a European University (EU + EEA) within the previous three years before the closing date of the call. EU citizenship is not compulsory. More information on the eligibility and procedure is available at

The first position is available beginning in October 2020, the second immediately. The successful candidates are expected to relocate to the Leuven area or immediate vicinity. The workplace will be the Department of Computer Science, located in the Arenberg Campus just outside the city centre.
