The Department of Mathematical Sciences (MATH) invites applicants for PhD stipends in mathematics.

Start date: Ordinarily 1 September 2026, but can be subject to negotiation.

About the Department

The department has about 55 permanent scientific staff members, around 60 PhD students, and 35 postdocs. It has strong research groups in many areas of mathematics, with active PhD, postdoc, and visitor programs.

Our buildings are located in central Copenhagen next to Fælledparken. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.


The PhD Programme

Option A: Three-year full-time study within the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme) for applicants with education equivalent to a relevant Danish Master’s degree.

Option B: Up to five-year full-time study within the integrated MSc and PhD programme (3+5 scheme) for applicants with education equivalent to a Danish Bachelor’s degree but not a Master’s degree.


Option A: Regular PhD Programme

Qualifications:

  • Completed degree equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree (180 ECTS BSc + 120 ECTS MSc) in Mathematics or related field.

Terms of Employment:

  • Full-time, maximum 3 years

  • Conditional upon successful enrollment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen

  • Terms and payment according to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State


Option B: Integrated MSc and PhD Programme

Qualifications:

  • Education equivalent to a Danish Bachelor’s degree relevant for the MSc and PhD programme

  • Enrollment in one of the Faculty’s MSc programmes in Mathematics or Quantum Information Science

Terms:

  • Duration: up to 5 years (depends on MSc credits)

  • Until MSc is obtained, funding is partly via state education grant (“SU-klip”) and salary for work (150 hours/year)

  • A PhD grant portion (2025): DKK 7,086 per month before tax

  • After MSc degree, salary-earning part of scholarship for 2 years according to Ministry of Finance and AC agreement


Responsibilities and Tasks (Both Programmes)

  • Complete and pass MSc education (only for integrated programme)

  • Carry out an independent research project under supervision

  • Complete PhD courses (~30 ECTS / ½ FTE)

  • Participate in active research environments, including stays abroad

  • Teaching and knowledge dissemination

  • Write scientific papers for high-impact journals

  • Write and defend PhD thesis


Qualifications

  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project

  • Relevant publications and work experience

  • Other relevant professional activities

  • Curious mind-set with strong interest in Mathematics

  • Good language skills
